Washington, D.C.— The Supreme Court heard oral argument today on Section 3 of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which forbids the federal government from recognizing state-level same-sex marriages. Judging by what I saw in the courtroom this morning, DOMA could be in serious trouble. “The question is whether or not the Federal government, under our federalism scheme, has the authority to regulate marriage,” declared Justice Anthony Kennedy, who repeatedly suggested that he saw DOMA as an unconstitutional federal intrusion on “the essence of the State police power.” Notably, at least one member of the Court’s liberal wing appeared to share Kennedy’s worries about DOMA and federalism. “What gives the federal government the right to be concerned at all at what the definition of marriage is?” asked Justice Sonia Sotomayor.Avant d'arrêter ce blog pour quelques jours, voici mon édito paru ce jour dans Lyon Mag. Mais ainsi en est-il de la focalisation médiatique dés que la gauche (et seulement la gauche alors que la problématique est posée à tous) , même la gauche la plus modérée, arrive au pouvoir...Il faut dire aussi que le gouvernement aurait sans doute gagné à éviter de perdre son temps en commentaires oiseux sur le sujet.

So Jackson Diehl learned nothing from the Iraq war: The problem here is not that advocates of the Iraq invasion have failed to learn its lessons. It is that opponents of that war, starting with Obama, have learned the wrong ones. One lesson from Iraq that many war opponents have learned is that the U.S. shouldn’t be waging unnecessary wars that serve no discernible U.S. interest. That isn’t the wrong lesson to learn. It’s one that Diehl simply ignores, which is probably why he never really addresses how it would serve U.S. interests to go to war in Syria.
