Infographic: The Hotel Price Index for #us and #canadian tourists. Twice-a-year, Hotels.com updates their Hotel Price Index, and this year I was contacted to design some new infographics to go along with the report. InfoNewt worked with designer Jeremy Yingling to create two infographics for the current set of data from the first half of 2011.
Since the research is global, we created one infographic based on American travelers and one based on Canadian travellers. The hotels.com® Hotel Price Index™ (HPI™) is a regular survey of hotel prices in major city destinations across the world. The HPI is based on bookings made on hotels.com and prices shown are those actually paid by customers (rather than advertised rates) for the first half of 2011. The report largely compares prices paid in 2010 with prices paid in 2011. The research is extensive, so we had to keep the information shared in the infographics fairly focused on only a few categories. This keeps the design clean and easy to read, but also whets the reader’s appetite for more.

Finding Consumers Who Are Ready to Buy - 48% uses YellowPages f local product & service search, 90% searchengines.
According to research conducted by Burke and commissioned by the Yellow Pages Association (YPA), users of print and online directories are prepared to make a purchase after researching local businesses. About eight in 10 users of either type of directory bought or planned to buy a product after their search. “Our biggest value to local businesses is our ability to generate qualified leads from consumers who are ready to buy something,” said Neg Norton, president of the YPA, in a statement. “This means that advertisers see a high return on investment for their advertising spend, which on average is about $15 for every $1 spent on local display advertising.”
A Q1 2010 study from BIA/Kelsey and ConStat found that 48% of Internet users looked for info in online yellow pages when researching local products and services, compared with 90% who used search engines. But the YPA “2009 Local Media Tracking Study” found greater trust in both print and Internet yellow pages than in online search. Mobile us Study: Mobile internet traffic is set to grow 400% by 2015.
It looks like mobile phone providers will have video to thank for their increased revenues over the next few years. According to a new study by British research firm Coda Research Consultancy, U.S. mobile data traffic will grow at a rate of 117% through 2015. What does that mean? As smartphones become more commonplace, phone companies could start charging a lot more money to keep them up and running. But consumers may not go along willingly.
For instance, with its exclusive access to the iPhone in the U.S., AT&T has gotten a lot of flak for not being able to keep up with the bandwidth demands of its users. According to Coda, U.S. mobile handset data traffic will grow from 8 petabytes per month this year to 327 petabytes per month in 2015. And the bulk of that growth is going to be in video consumption, according to Coda. And that means consumers will likely say goodbye to all-you-can-eat mobile data plans. For starters, it could get extremely confusing for consumers. Und noch ne App zum telefonieren :-) ... "An iPhone App With Potential to Shake Up An Entire Industry" Those aren’t our words but the words of the NY Times to describe a new iPhone app called Line2, an app that can turn your iPhone into a better phone and an iTouch into an iPhone (where a Wi-FI signal is available).
Similarly to how one can use Skype to make VOIP calls, Line2 uses the same premise which can in turn allow you to save a lot of cash since AT&T’s 3G network is standard on the iPhone. Similarly to Skype there is a monthly fee of 14.95 but when you’re saving a few times that worth of minutes it’s definitely worth it. If the savings are quite drastic, you may even consider downgrading to a cheaper plan. Line2 like many VOIP clients in the app store adds a second phone number to your iPhone and includes a built in contact list and an iPhone like UI that’s very friendly to use. One issue that is present in both Line2 and Skype is the fact that in order to receive and place calls the app needs to be running on your iDevice (unless it’s jailbroken).
