Twice-a-year, Hotels.com updates their Hotel Price Index , and this year I was contacted to design some new infographics to go along with the report. InfoNewt worked with designer Jeremy Yingling to create two infographics for the current set of data from the first half of 2011. Since the research is global, we created one infographic based on American travelers and one based on Canadian travellers . The research is extensive, so we had to keep the information shared in the infographics fairly focused on only a few categories. This keeps the design clean and easy to read, but also whets the reader’s appetite for more. We varied the visual designs for each category.
By Lauren Goode The Internet is poised to overtake newspapers as the second-largest U.S. advertising medium by revenue behind television, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Global Entertainment and Media Outlook for 2010 to 2014. An ad on the Yahoo homepage. Revenue from online ads is expected to increase in the next five years, according to a report from accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. The online ad business, excluding mobile ads, is set to expand to $34.4 billion in 2014 from $24.2 billion in 2009, according to the report, which PwC plans to release Tuesday.
Interactions hold steady Many social site users make good use of the voice that the medium provides them to talk about brands, products and services. An April 2010 study by ROI Research commissioned by Performics found that, at least once a week, 33% of active Twitter users share opinions about companies or products, while 32% make recommendations and 30% ask for them. Marketers using social media have tried to foster this type of earned media and other brand interactions, but a comparison of the study results with previous research, from October 2009, shows little change in consumers’ brand-oriented behavior. On Twitter, significant percentages of users who had connected with a brand would recommend, discuss or purchase from the company, but those numbers inched slightly downward over six months. On Facebook, users had similarly static opinions on the usefulness of social media to connect with brands.
The Nielsen Company today reported March 2010 data for the top U.S. Search Providers. Searches represent the total number of queries conducted at the provider. Example: An estimated 6.4 billion search queries were conducted at Google Search, representing 65.7 percent of all search queries conducted during the given time period.
The death of Michael Jackson, the rise of Justin Bieber. Volcanic ash shutting down air travel over Europe, Ricky Martin outing himself. It’s usually the unexpected stories that take control of social media. However, there are a few major stories on the horizon that will likely inundate your social media world, and leave you wishing for an escape. Plan accordingly.
Todd Hale, Senior Vice President, Consumer & Shopper Insights, The Nielsen Company SUMMARY: Once on their way to extinction, coupons made a strong resurgence in 2009. While they offer consumers a chance to stretch their dollars further, they also offer real growth opportunities for retailers and manufacturers—if they know exactly who to target and how to leverage established and emerging coupon delivery vehicles. It looks like mobile phone providers will have video to thank for their increased revenues over the next few years. According to a new study by British research firm Coda Research Consultancy , U.S. mobile data traffic will grow at a rate of 117% through 2015. What does that mean? As smartphones become more commonplace, phone companies could start charging a lot more money to keep them up and running. But consumers may not go along willingly.
Those aren’t our words but the words of the NY Times to describe a new iPhone app called Line2 , an app that can turn your iPhone into a better phone and an iTouch into an iPhone (where a Wi-FI signal is available). Similarly to how one can use Skype to make VOIP calls, Line2 uses the same premise which can in turn allow you to save a lot of cash since AT&T’s 3G network is standard on the iPhone. Similarly to Skype there is a monthly fee of 14.95 but when you’re saving a few times that worth of minutes it’s definitely worth it.
