Complete Guide to Woodworking

Popular Woodworking Magazine. Here’s how to cut through all the confusion about oil, tung oil and wiping varnish. By Bob Flexner Finishing is a mystery to most woodworkers, but it’s not because finishes are difficult to apply. All that’s involved in applying a finish is transferring a liquid to wood using one of three really easy-to-use tools: a rag, a brush or a spray gun. Finishing is a mystery largely because of the confusion created by manufacturers in their labeling, and there’s no better example of this than the mislabeling of various “oil” finishes. The Background Before the growth of the consumer market in the 1960s and 1970s there was little confusion about finishes. Linseed oil (which is from the seeds of flax plants) and blends of linseed oil and varnish are both easy to apply. Next day, sand lightly to smooth the raised grain. 3M Micro-Abrasives for Sharpening. Classic Hand Tools Limited - Planes, Blades, Tool Care.

Scraper Set

Formerly sold under the ÒSandvikÓ name, it has the right thickness (0.85 mm) and hardness (around 60 on the Rockwell Scale) for long scraping operations without the need for resharpening. It is supplied with a plastic sleeve for safe storage without damaging the sharp edges. 2) A Burnishing Tool We have found that this machinists smoothing tool works very well as a burnisher for Òturning the edgeÓ on cabinet scrapers. With an overall length of 15 inches and about 4 inches of concave shaped hardened steel tip (about 65 on Rockwell Scale) it really produces the cutting burr on a dull scraper edge after just a few strokes.

Wood Veneers:how to glue up wood veneers

Brush or Roll on with a hard rubber roller - a nice even & THIN glue line. Never apply glue to the veneer itself - only to the substrate. Hide Glue: If the glue gels over it is not a problem. The veneer will not stick, so align it to the right position, cover it with craft paper and with your iron on medium, heat the entire surface to be glued. The heat from the iron will reactive the glue. PVA: Place veneer on substrate, and with a small roller press down the veneer to the surface, eliminating any aire bubbles as go. Vacuum Bag Presses are great to use, because they will exert an even force across the entire surface. For small projects, you can actually iron on the veneers. Contact Cements: Remember that contact cements work a little different than traditional glues. You can use a "decorators size" or thinned glue to seal the back of the veneer, so that it absorbs less moisture thus less shrinkage and drying issues.

Making a Guitar Body

These are excellent candidates for snapping up cheaply to give them the finish they deserve! Here are the basic tools you will need to get this job done. On the right are a few that aren't necessary but they do come in handy when working on this type of stripping project! Here is why this body is a very good candidate for using a chemical stripper. It has already been refinished by somebody else. If the body has a factory finish, it might not always be an ideal candidate for chemical stripping. OK let's get started. Next comes the most boring part! You may have noticed there is a glass bowl sitting beside the guitar.

After you have waited for the required time you can take a plastic scraper and start to lift the paint up off the body, as pictured on the left below. Now flip the body over and replace the top layers of newspaper, disposing of them safely.
