Eco Geek: 7 Near-Future Wonders of Modern Green Technology Article by Urbanist, filed under 7 Wonders Series in the Travel category.
Green architecture comes in many forms though lately it seems like these forms are stranger than ever. Urban skyscraper farms? Floating eco-cities? Glowing solar towers? The so-called Lilypad Project is perhaps the most fantastical of these green wonders and certainly the farthest from being built but is too amazing a concept not to mention. The most impressive feature of the new Bahrain World Trade Center is, no doubt, the three massive wind turbines situated between the two towers comprising the main building. The MagLev Wind Turbine is a big step forward in the world of wind power. This glowing solar tower looks like something straight out of the Bible. Urban skyscraper farms are still purely conceptual for now but are amazing theoretical propositions. How to Hide from Machines. CV Dazzle is a response.
It is a form of expressive interference that combines highly stylized makeup and hair styling with face-detection thwarting designs. CV, or computer vision, Dazzle is an updated version of the original dazzle camouflage from WWI, which was used to protect warships from submarine attacks. Like the original dazzle war paint, CV Dazzle is an unobvious style of camouflage because its eye-catching patterns and colors draw attention instead of hiding from it.
As decoration, CV Dazzle can be boldly applied as hair styling or makeup, or together in combination with accessories. As camouflage, this facial markup works to protect against automated face detection and recognition systems by altering the contrast and spatial relationship of key facial features. When disrupting face-detection it is advisable to avoid wearing makeup that enhances facial features. These videos visualize the detection process of OpenCV’s face detector. 1. 2. 3. Amphibious Architecture: Foundations Float Above Floods Article by Urbanist, filed under Houses & Residential in the Architecture category.
Floodwaters rise, drench homes, then recede, leaving disaster in their wake – a temporary change renders many structures permanently uninhabitable. But what if houses could ride out the storms, rising with the tides, then settling back down to the ground when the water is gone? Based on the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Morphosis (along with Brad Pitt’s Make it Right Foundation) has designs for new adaptive architecture, while the Buoyant Foundation Project proposes a system for retrofitting existing homes. The latter organization, founded by Elizabeth Fenuta (Alumni of University of Waterloo, School of Architecture) grew out of its creator’s Master of Architecture thesis project.

Bio-reactors and micro-algae sound like the stuff of science fiction, but this is the real deal: biomass built into panel glass is both generating heat and acting as a responsive light and sound barrier, all in one brilliant new building in Hamburg. Arup has long been predicting incredible innovations in architecture, but they are also keen to show that their designers and engineers are actually working toward world-changing technologies. Bright sunlight causes the bio-reactors to grow faster and supply more shade on demand.
The resulting biomass captures solar heat as well, and can be harvested and used as a source of energy itself. There is always talk of futuristic building technologies, but few firms are able to break new ground in some of the most promising directions. 15 (More) Future Wonders of Green Technology: From Spinning Towers to Seawater Greenhouses. Ecolution: 15 (More) Future Wonders of Green Technology Article by Urbanist, filed under Conceptual & Futuristic in the Technology category.
As the world increasingly focuses on sustainable initiatives, green architecture is a booming industry. Everything from single-family residences to giant 1.2-million-square-foot complexes complete with giant skyscrapers is getting the green treatment, and the innovation that iss going into these plans is more complex than ever. From spinning towers to seawater greenhouses, ome of these structures will debut as early as the fall of 2008 while others present a view of what 100 years from now may hold, but all represent amazing leaps in green technology that push the boundaries of what we’ve ever thought possible.
