Rubik’s Battenburg. By Vicky in Cake 73 Comments Tags: blackcurrant , cake , jam , marzipan , rubik's , Victoria sponge Update: On July 14th, two days after posting I received an email from Ernő Rubik himself saying that he liked my cake. I guess the world is really a very small place. ‘ Thanks for the nice birthday surprise which sweetens the bitterness of passing time.’

Hungarian Ernő Rubik invented the Rubik’s cube in 1974. We wanted to add some flavour to the cakes and not have it all just taste of plain old sponge cake. We essentially had to make three cakes which amounted to a whole pound of butter and over a jar of jam. The cakes were then measured and cut into pieces before being glued together with sticky blackcurrant jam. When I brought this cake into work people really didn’t what to make of it. Here’s how: One Basic Battenberg - 6 oz. of butter - 6 oz. of castor sugar - 3 eggs - 6oz of self-raising flour - few drops of food colouring (I used red, orange, green, blue and yellow) To finish. Blueberry frozen yogurt. Blueberry Frozen Yogurt I’m getting kinda desperate for warm weather. Warm, sunny weather to be exact. And sitting on the deck in the sun, and opening the windows, and putting my sweaters away once and for all. But since I can’t control what Mother Nature’s dishing out, I decided to soothe myself with this frozen yogurt instead.

I’m so glad I did because the blueberries are total rock stars, despite the fact that they started out sitting in a bag in my freezer. Recipe: Blueberry Frozen Yogurt (from Simply Recipes; my changes are in italics) 3 c. of fresh blueberries or 1 lb. of frozen 3 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice (about 1 lemon) 3/4 – 1 c. sugar (I used 3/4 c.) 1/4 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1 1/2 c. plain yogurt (I used vanilla Greek yogurt.) 1/2 c. whole milk Place the blueberries, lemon juice, sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a medium saucepan.

Fill a large bowl (big enough to hold the pan) with ice water and sit pan inside it. Make about 1 quart. Sweet Treat: Sugar Cubes for a Coffee Party. Hey everyone! I really like hosting little get-togethers with my friends like Sunday morning brunches or dinner parties where each guest brings a different dish. And as you guys know, I'm also totally obsessed with drinking coffee . So when I came across this idea for DIY sugar cubes, I nearly rearranged my entire schedule so that I could combine my two loves and have a coffee & tea party with my girlfriends! :) These sweetly shaped sugar cubes inspired my idea of having friends over for coffee and tea and telling each person bring a different little treat (cookies, scones, croissants, etc!).

Pour ½ cup of granulated white or brown sugar into a bowl Use a teaspoon to pour small amounts of water on the sugar little by little, until the mix has the consistency of a paste (Make sure the sugar doesn't completely melt!) How easy is that! Would you make these sugar cubes for a coffee & tea party? Photo is from here . Check these out too...

July is National Ice Cream Month… aww yeah! Jul09 by Cindy Hopper In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. This is my kind of holiday! To celebrate we made our own “Magic Shell” ice cream topping. It was unbelievably easy— and it tastes pretty close to the real thing! DIY Magic Shell Recipe for Ice Cream Ingredients 1 1/4 Cups Chocolate Chips1/2 Cup Coconut Oil (measured when solid) DIY Magic Shell Recipe for Ice Cream Instructions Melt chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave about 1 minute (depending on your microwave). Pour into a bottle. Store in the refrigerator (though in the summer it’s likely to stay liquidy unrefrigerated). Notes for DIY Magic Shell Recipe: You can substitute butter for the coconut oil, however the coconut oil gives the more ‘real’ Magic Shell flavor. You can use milk chocolate chips, but everyone we served preferred the semi-sweet chocolate chips Looking for more ways to celebrate National Ice Cream Month?

Hey Everyone!! I’m just gonna start out by saying, I am so stinking excited about this recipe! A couple of weeks ago I had a follower e-mail me about a frosting recipe that would glow in the dark. Or I should say almost glow in the dark. Specifically she needed a cupcake recipe that could glow under a black light, but the trouble was that I couldn’t find one on the internet to try, so I decided to try my hand at making one. After a couple of tries I am glad to report that I have figured it out!! Yay! Tonic Water! Then it dawned on me that if you make gelatin with tonic water the jello will glow. After a few dips and trips back into the freezer to set, the frosting glowed!!

Happy (early) St. Patrick’s Day! I’ve always been a sucker for this green holiday because my birthday is the day after. When asked my favorite color, I still say green, even though I think anyone who has seen my apartment could tell you that I clearly prefer purple. Most of my birthday parties growing up involved some sort of green theme, and clovers always made an appearance.

I’ve mentioned before how I will take advantage of any excuse to make themed food, and St. This sorbet only has three ingredients (and that’s counting water), and it can be made without an ice cream maker. Apparently, 2 ice pops a day keeps the belly away (he says this about doughnuts too).

But he buys those plain ice pops that are basically sugar water with artificial flavoring and colour – you know the ones…they come in grape, orange, and cherry flavors. So I made these fruit and yogurt ones that are way more nutritious (and tastier) than those sticks of frozen sugar. You get your vitamin C from the strawberries, potassium from the bananas, and calcium from the yogurt! Check out the verdict at the end of the post! Strawberry Banana Ice Pops Makes 4.
