Internet addiction has become a major social problem in the United States, Korea, and other countries. And now the same thing is happening in Japan as well. The tendency toward Internet addiction is increasing in particular among younger age groups, as a result of the increased popularity of smartphones. During February 2013, my research team—together with the Institute for Information and Communications Policy, in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications—carried out an online survey of Internet habits.
A total of 2,605 people took part, from elementary school students to working adults up to 25 years of age.
