(Actually, this should work for maps all the way back to Alpha too!) The basic idea is fairly straightforward: put a river between old and new chunks so we don't get those horrible vertical walls, then smooth the surrounding terrain into a valley. It requires two passes. First a step to trace the outline of the world before new chunks are added.
