Pendant ses études de philosophie à Paris I et d'art numérique à l'École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (Paris), il fonde Incident.net (1994), l'une des premières plates-formes de netart sur Internet. Il développe pendant ces premières années des fictions variables qui entrelacent les affects et les technologies en détournant des flux provenant du réseau. Rapidement Internet devient le médium principal de son activité artistique, comme support de diffusion mais surtout comme source d'inspiration qu'il adapte après sur d'autres supports, que ceux-ci soient numériques ou analogique. Il collabore avec des designers comme Ruedi Baur, conçoit le site du Centre Pompidou, du MAC/VAL et de différentes structures culturelles.

The work explores a time-collapsing journey in our land, from the perspective of a single traveller inside an ever-evolving land and sky scape. Red's music was inspired by the image of the calling of a rattle and an outdoor fire, while the individual illustrations by Baerg are abstractions of the Cree cosmological world. Gates then used sound-reactive animation and experimental motion graphics techniques to bring the abstractions to life alongside the music.
