Reporting Recipe: Using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for Data Projects. Announcing ProPublica’s guide to using Mechanical Turk for data-journalism projects. Of all of journalism’s recent evolutions, data-driven reporting is one of the most celebrated. But as much as we should toast data’s powers, we must acknowledge its cost: Assembling even a small dataset can require hours of tedious work, deterring even the most disciplined of journalists and their editors. Fortunately, there’s an affordable -- and amazing -- tool that can make the impossible easy: Amazon’s Mechanical Turk [1](mTurk). For those unfamiliar with Mechanical Turk, it’s an online marketplace, set up by the online shopping site Amazon, where anyone can hire workers to complete short, simple tasks like quickly transcribing interviews [2], copying data from thousands of charts [3], and even sorting through satellite images in hopes of locating missing individuals [4].

Amazon originally developed it as an in-house tool, and commercialized it in 2005. Got questions? Do Millennials Really Want Their Bosses to Call Their Parents? - Vince Molinaro. By Vince Molinaro | 9:00 AM April 14, 2014 How far would you go to build a strong relationship with your employees? Would you go as far as calling their parents?

In an interview last fall with Fortune magazine, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi revealed that she often writes letters to her direct reports’ parents to thank them for “the gift” of their children. Some of those parents even write back. “And it opened up emotions of the kind I have never seen,” Nooyi told Fortune. “And one executive, I remember, he went home and he said to his mom, ‘You know, my boss is really giving me a tough time.’ Nooyi also admitted that she has called the parents of potential hires, urging them to convince their children to accept a job with PepsiCo. Is Nooyi demonstrating the new best practice for recruiting top talent? PepsiCo is not the only big employer to reconfigure its relationship with millennial employees to include more interaction with parents.

Software for Writing a PhD Thesis - Joshua L. Mann. There are four categories of software for thesis writing: (1) project organizing; (2) word-processing; (3) bibliographic organization; and (4) original language research. Here are some of the best programs, along with those I find essential to my PhD thesis and scholarly writing workflow. [UPDATED April 2014] Now I’ll be using a macbook pro for the task, but many of the software programs I mentioned can run on mac or pc (though some run better on one or the other). Project organizing/note taking. Some might use a word-processing program for this while others might find a specialized program instead.

I’ve decided on a more complicated yet powerful program, Scrivener. So why use this and a word processor? Scrivener is very affordable and they offer great customer support. Do you want to write faster? Wish you could keep everything associated with your writing in one easy-to-access place that’s portable and searchable? Consider giving Scrivener a try. Scrivener is writing software—with versions for both Mac and Windows—that’s customizable to the way you work. When a friend recommended Scrivener to me several years ago, I wondered what it could possibly do that my standard word processor couldn’t. Boy, was I shocked! Unlike a word processor that only allows you to create one document for each piece of writing—and forces you to write linearly—Scrivener can hold multiple documents within a project. And because you’re working in “chunks” you don’t have to write in order. The documents can be organized into folders, and the whole structure—a sort of outline view—of your project is visible in a sidebar called the Binder.

And there’s so much more. Divide up your work Why would you want to? Plot or Not Pantsers, those who write by the seat of their pants, don’t fret. Thesis Writing with Scrivener | PhD Blog (dot) Net. I mentioned Scrivener in a recent post. It would appear that this word-processing and file management desktop programme – specifically developed by Literature and Latte for writers – is becoming increasingly adopted by academics. There are other, more comprehensive accounts of using Scrivener on the web, such as here. But as a relatively new Scrivener user, here are some thoughts on my ongoing experience of using it in drafting my thesis.

Getting Started Using Scrivener effectively requires a shift in thinking from traditional word processing programmes and practices. I tend to find the best way to learn new software is to dive straight in with a ‘real-life’ project. Scalability Subsequently, in transferring my working thesis texts to Scrivener, I considered creating a separate project file for each individual chapter, and there are probably clever ways of linking / coordinating across projects that I have yet to explore. Like this: Scrivener — A perfect program for dissertation writing. No kidding — I wrote “Organizing Creativity” with it, which was over 400 pages long, had 138.105 words and 785.500 characters, and it was still very easy to find the thread or specific spots where I wanted to change something. Now my dissertation thesis has 45.531 words and 288.429 characters and still isn’t finished — and I just cannot cope with the love for this program.
