Facebook has given its main “f” logo icon a makeover, flattening the design by removing the pale blue bar along the bottom, which gave the icon a reflective sheen/slight 3D effect, as well as moving the position of the f so it now bleeds right off the bottom.

The competition gave designers the opportunity to reimagine uses for New York City’s 11,000 public payphones. Since most people carry cell phones, their intended use has become outdated, so the challenge was to create new uses for the structure that would better serve current needs. The winners were selected earlier this week at Quirky with six entries awarded for best connectivity, creativity, visual design, functionality, and community impact.
A sixth prize category, ‘Popular Choice,’ will be decided by public vote through the City of New York’s Facebook Page, where voting runs until March 14th. Sage and Coombe Architects won the Connectivity Award with ‘NYfi,’ an interactive portal to public info, goods and services, a hub for free wireless internet access, and an open infrastructure for future apps. Brush and Yong Ju Lee of E/B Office New York created an extensive fiber-optic installation for the Teton County Library grand opening in Wyoming that visualizes library searches in flashes of colored light. Dubbed Filament Mind, the installation, which opened at the end of January, uses over five miles of fiber-optic cables and 44 LED illuminators to collect, categorize, and render searches from libraries all across the state of Wyoming into glowing bursts of color. Visualizations begin when a person uses specific words while searching online library catalogs.
