Earning the trust of your library members is crucial to delivering a great user experience. Without trust, it is impossible to connect to library members in a meaningful way. Libraries benefit in all sorts of ways when they’re trusted institutions. Trust breeds loyalty, and loyal library users are more likely to take advantage of the library. What’s more, loyal patrons will also be more apt to sing the praises of the library to neighbors and colleagues. There are many ways to earn—and lose—people’s trust in a library. As we are social creatures, the human interactions that happen inside of our buildings are often a make-or-break aspect of building trust.

Customer service also involves follow-through. It is easier to relate to a group of people than it is to a building. There are plenty of opportunities for this: displays, events, contributions in newsletters, emails, and on the web, among others. A great way to earn loyalty is to help patrons to be successful. Human Rights and Librarians. A Second Living Room: the Public Library Zavidovići’s Youth Corner. In Bosnia and Herzegovinia, many students commute from rural communities every day by bus to attend school in town.

For young students, this often means long hours waiting for buses with nothing to do. Located just next to a bus station, the librarians at the Zavidovići Public Library realised that the students waiting for the buses were spending their time unproductively every day after school. Winner of the library's photo competition. Photo by Eldar Muhic, republished from the library's facebook page. This realisation led to the creation of a space in the local library dedicated to these children, addressing this problem of long hours spent waiting for buses. To attract the young people and to teach new skills, the initiated a multi-media centre with creative programming that would be open before and after school, with access to computers the Internet, and technology skills trainings – supported by the iNGO EIFL.

AK: Connecting. Rural Alaska communities are not known for having good internet connections, cell phone reception or, really, many good ways of connecting to people and programs outside their area. But rural public libraries do now have those types of connections, thanks to a program through the Alaska State Library that connects libraries all over the state – and country – for a variety of programs and purposes. Download Audio William Shakespeare probably didn’t have this mind when he imagined his plays being performed. On a cold and dreary evening in Southeast Alaska, library patrons gather to read Shakespeare’s Hamlet. *The catch? “The news is brought that Hamlet has returned to Denmark…. If it sounds like Craig Librarian Amy Marshal is on a Skype-like connection, that’s because she is. Owl connects more than 100 public libraries in Alaska and is used for a variety of programs. The recent Shakespeare series was a little different.

“It’s super interactive. Library Of The Future. Forget what you know about the library of the 20th century. You know, those dark places with clunky microform machines fossilizing in the basement and with rows of encyclopedias standing, perfectly alphabetized, in denial of their obsolescence. The library as a warehouse of information is an outdated concept. The library of the 21st century is a community workshop, a hub filled with the tools of the knowledge economy. "If we can't shine in this environment, in this economy, shame on us," says Corinne Hill, the director of library system in Chattanooga, Tennessee—a system that has thoroughly migrated into the current era.

The library of the 21st century still has books, but it also has 3-D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, and spaces for conducting business meetings. It offers computer coding classes. It has advanced video- and audio-production software. People go to the public library for Grisham, not Hume, after all. The Chattanooga public library's fourth floor. New Survey Reveals Promise of Myanmar’s Libraries in Transition. The first-ever survey of libraries and public information needs in Myanmar (formerly Burma) has found that the country’s village libraries are having an impact on the lives of citizens, despite the cumulative effects of years of censorship and resource constraints.

While few village libraries had ideal facilities or public-access internet, the government has begun equipping district-level libraries. These libraries are hubs for the country’s younger, better-educated villagers. Also, the history of philanthropic support and cultural value placed on the institution meant that nearly 5,000 libraries have managed to continue serving their communities based on local support and volunteerism. The survey was sponsored by The Asia Foundation, a Beyond Access coalition member, and the Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation, Beyond Access’s project partner in Myanmar. Bibliography & resource list: Demonstrating value. Libraries reinvent themselves for the 21st century. December 12, 2013|By Tom Mullaney The Arlington Heights Public Library has added a new space designated for teens called The Hub. The Chicago Public Library is also considering new ways to use space. (Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Handout) For centuries, the defining role of the library has been as a repository of books. Now, in the 21st century, the library faces perhaps its most momentous challenge: Americans are moving away increasingly from the printed page to digital screens for information and communication.

Library leaders nationwide are adapting to this shift by reimagining the library as an engaged community center. This piece first ran in Printers Row Journal, delivered to Printers Row members with the Sunday Chicago Tribune and by digital edition via email. Core issues — including technology integration, new services, institutional identity and right-sizing collections (consider the flap over New York Public Library’s proposed redesign) — are under active review. Space. Are We Overlooking a Powerful Engine for Social & Economic Change? A one-page infographic outlining how libraries can contribute to social and economic development. Public libraries are often overlooked as development partners, even though they’re locally-based, sustainable, publicly funded, professionally staffed, and trusted by the communities they serve. More than 230,000 public libraries — 73% of the world’s total — are located in developing and transitioning countries.

Worldwide there are 13 times more public libraries than hospitals. At a time of tight development budgets, investing in new infrastructure and unproven models is risky — working with libraries offers a better, smarter way of doing development. Funders can capitalize on the results that these local institutions have already produced in their own communities, focusing on creating economies of scale and scope. Libraries advance development by doing more than enabling access to information. Putting the "e" in eHealth: Lake County Public Library Provides ACA Technology Training for Patrons. What’s so Rural ‘bout Rural Libraries, Anyway? By Justin Grimes Statistician, Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation at IMLS Public libraries play an important role in any community, but when that community is small or geographically isolated, the role they play as an essential community anchor institution comes into full view.

Having grown up in Appalachia, I know firsthand the impact that public libraries can make in rural communities. But when I say rural, what does that mean? What does it mean to be a rural library? What defines “ruralness”? This is an interesting question we must answer when exploring rural issues because the term “rural” can mean different things to different people.

So how does IMLS define rural libraries? IMLS chose this classification scheme for a variety of reasons: It provides a more detailed, granular classification of geographic areas as opposed to other simpler classification methods. It better aligns our efforts with other federal agencies and their data, i.e., Department of Education, U.S. Kitchen at Hartford Public Library is now open! | HPL Blogs. The Library Adventure uses affiliate links, see our policies for more information. I hear it all the time… naps, chews books, can’t sit still, parking, weather, germs, I can barely get a shower…. No more excuses! Kids should go to Story Time! And here’s why… This is especially important for new parents. 9. My son and I have both made friends through Story Time. 8.

Many older kids have no idea how to navigate a library, find resources, ask for help, or even check out books. 7. From the minute they are born, babies are learning to connect meaning not only to sound, but also to symbols. 6. Ideally we all learn that words are made up of sounds. 5. Hopefully, kids learn that letters correspond to sounds and have meaning. 4. When we are exposed to language in books we begin to learn that words rhyme, pictures have clues and word sounds can add meaning and richness to a story. 3. A regular Story Time schedule can help busy grownups stay on top of library returns! 2. Source 1. Austerity measure make libraries vital as more needy people use them | Sam Darian | Society. It seems that public library assistants are the new social workers.

Or should that be babysitters, jobsearch trainers, befrienders, English language teachers, IT experts and general mental health and community workers? In the year that I have worked at an inner-city public library, I have been variously heartened, delighted, challenged and verbally abused by the human spectrum that visits. But what has struck me most is how vital – now more than ever – libraries are to communities in which local authority cuts to other services are washing up rising numbers of walking wounded, many of whom stumble into our library for help. So the continued rampage against libraries makes no sense. Since 2010, 439 libraries across the UK have closed, with another 280 under threat. Earlier this month, children's author Michael Rosen told Radio 4 listeners: "The library system is in turmoil, facing upheaval of a kind we haven't seen since the Public Libraries Act was passed in 1850.

" Community Creativity. In every town, there are probably community members who have written novels, poetry, and other works whose writing has never seen the light of day. There are probably others who have the creative potential to write the great American novel, but are daunted by the idea of getting it published. Those works, both written and potential, represent much of the creative voice of the community. Through education, tools, and actual publishing and distribution mechanisms, public libraries are helping to make it easier for patrons to publish their work, whether they are doing so just for themselves, to make their work freely accessible to all, or to sell their work. Today, libraries of any type can help give their patrons a voice and make their creative work accessible to the world. A small number of public and academic libraries have made Espresso Book Machines available for community publishing. MEREDITH FARKAS is head of instructional services at Portland (Oreg.)

Multnomah County Library homelessness survey spurs push to add social services. Key findings in the report Homeless people visit the library more often, and stay longer, than housed patrons. Homeless people use the library in much the same way as those with homes. Most of them look for books. At the Central Library, 51 percent of respondents used the library for Internet access.

Among that group, 28 percent were homeless. Among library patrons using library computers to look for a job, 46 percent were homeless. Some library patrons were seeking social services such as mental health and domestic violence help. Most patrons who use the library to escape foul weather are not homeless. Multnomah County's homeless and those with mental health issues might soon have easier access to human services in a place they already turn to routinely for shelter, resources and reading materials. Most of the findings aren't a huge surprise. Implementing the report's recommendations will cost little to nothing, county officials say. "It's a place to sit down and relax," he said. How Libraries Can Stop the Next Hurricane Disaster - Eric Levenson. The U.S. will soon get its first real threat of the fall hurricane season with Tropical Storm Karen ramping up in the Gulf of Mexico. And with that comes an intriguing suggestion of how to prevent another stormy disaster — build more libraries.

That's the suggestion of a New York Times commentary piece today that explains why the typical safety protocols of hunkering down in your own home with emergency supplies after a storm is actually bad for public health. The Times' architecture critic Michael Kimmelman explains that after Hurricane Sandy, powerless and hungry people went to local country clubs or community centers much more than official, city-sanctioned areas. People prefer to congregate in buildings with a social focus, like libraries. Particularly for the poor, the safety and community of local branch libraries is of major importance.

The question is particularly relevant right now, as Tropical Storm Karen barrels toward the upper Gulf Coast. For Disaster Preparedness: Pack A Library Card? Hide captionVolunteers at the Queens Library in the Far Rockaway section of Queens hand out coats to people affected by Hurricane Sandy. AFP/Getty Images Volunteers at the Queens Library in the Far Rockaway section of Queens hand out coats to people affected by Hurricane Sandy. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, libraries in New York helped the storm's victims turn a new page. Librarians helped thousands of people fill out relief forms, connect to the Internet and make plans to rebuild. The New Dorp branch of the New York Public Library in Staten Island wasn't damaged during Sandy. "We even had people asking if they could use the restrooms to clean up a little bit," says Barbara Byrne-Goldie, a librarian at New Dorp.

Byrne-Goldie, who has been at the New Dorp branch for nearly 20 years, says she and the other librarians knew many of those patrons personally and went out of their way to help. Later, the library hosted free financial-planning seminars for Sandy victims. Turning A Page Inside A Rural One-Room Library. Press Releases Use of Small and Rural Libraries Grows in the Digital Age.
