In a beautiful feat of biometic design, Philips’ concept for LED streetlights harvest the sun’s rays during the day to light up the streets at night. The design was inspired by how flowers open up to the sun in order to collect the most sunlight (the inside of the petals feature solar panels), then the LEDs are illuminated once the sun sets. The lights also feature motion sensors to trigger the lights only when pedestrians are within a certain distance, in order to save energy. Dubbed Sustainable City Lights , the concept was designed for the 2008 Phillips Simplicity Event in 2008. While they’re just a concept for now, I’ll be happy to see these adorning city streets everywhere hopefully someday soon!
