Beginner Mandarin Chinese This course is for people with little to no experience with Mandarin. We will start with basic pronunciation, and then move to basic greetings, and then start working with some beginner level grammatical structures. The course will take place over 8 weeks. I will be doing a lecture every Wednesday at 8pm EST (UTC-5), starting on October 30th, 2013. I will be giving these lectures using a VoIP program called Mumble. If you have used Mumble in the past, the information for where to join will be below.
I would rather use a voice chat software rather than just uploading video lectures so that people can interact with me and one another. It is not required that you have a microphone, but it is helpful. Lectures Prerequisites None, this course is intended for the absolute beginner. Syllabus There will be no required text for this class. As stated above, for the live lectures, we will meet in a program called Mumble. Address: mumble.redditgaming.com Port: 64748. I would have preferred not to comment seriously on Mochizuki's work before much more thought had gone into the very basics, but judging from the internet activity, there appears to be much interest in this subject, especially from young people. It would obviously be very nice if they were to engage with this circle of ideas, regardless of the eventual status of the main result of interest.
That is to say, the current sense of urgency to understand something seems generally a good thing. So I thought I'd give the flimsiest bit of introduction imaginable at this stage. On the other hand, as with many of my answers, there's the danger I'm just regurgitating common knowlege in a long-winded fashion, in which case, I apologize. For anyone who wants to really get going, I recommend as starting point some familiarity with two papers, 'The Hodge-Arakelov theory of elliptic curves (HAT)' and 'The Galois-theoretic Kodaira-Spencer morphism of an elliptic curve (GTKS).' To repeat: Mochizuki on ABC « Quomodocumque. [Update: Lots of traffic coming in from Hacker News, much of it presumably from outside the usual pro number theory crowd that reads this blog.
If you're not already familiar with the ABC conjecture, I recommend Barry Mazur's beautiful expository paper "Questions about Number. "] [Re-update: Minhyong Kim's discussion on Math Overflow is the most well-informed public discussion of Mochizuki's strategy. (Of course, it is still very sketchy indeed, as Minhyong hastens to emphasize.) Both Kim's writeup and discussions I've had with others suggest that the best place to start may be Mochizuki's 2000 paper "A Survey of the Hodge-Arakelov Theory of Elliptic Curves I. "] Shin Mochizuki has released his long-rumored proof of the ABC conjecture, in a paper called “Inter-universal Teichmuller theory IV: log-volume computations and set-theoretic foundations.”
Well, now the time has come. Let me highlight one point which is clearly important, which I draw from pp.3–6 of the linked paper. Like this: Intro to Function Theory + More Detailed Descriptions of Each Function Attitude. Functional Analysis of Psychological Types. Carl Jung developed psychological types based on the four functions (Feeling, Thinking, iNtuition and Sensing) and the two attitudes (Extraversion and Introversion). (There is, in my experience, a good deal of confusion, especially among those without some grounding in psychological type, about the nature of these functions and attitudes.
The words don't necessarily mean what we expect them to mean, and caution should be used in applying common usage to these terms if this system is to be of value in the understanding of basic temperaments.) In this system there are eight basic types, each designated by its dominant (defining, controlling, pre-eminent) function: Jung developed these types within a mental illness model. He spoke of functions being dominant, auxiliary, tertiary and inferior. The 16 types popularized through the MBTI reflect each of Jung's eight types subdivided by auxiliary (secondary) functions. In summary, the sixteen types in four-function terminology are:
Function Attitude. Cognitive Functions; Diagram Approach. Okay let me start with Si... (The following is a collaboration from mulitple persons fwiw) In Jung's Psychological Types he says the following on Introverted Sensation: "Introverted sensation apprehends the background of the physical world rather than its surface. The decisive thing is not the reality of the object, but the reality of the subjective factor, of the primordial images which, in their totality, constitute a psychic mirror-world.
This description of Si is the only place where time as being a realm of a function is mentioned explicitly in the book. This is another relevent passage in the Si description: "Actually he lives in a mythological world, where men, animals, locomotives, houses, rivers, and mountains appear either as benevolent deities or as malevolent demons. " This is something I had personally noticed about Si, and was delighted when I read it in Jung's words. External Field Dynamics (EFD) Si – External Field Dynamics (EFD) How Si Differs from Se How Si Differs from Se.
