Foursquare's new frontier isn't just newspapers, but media companies as a whole.
Case in point: Bravo and Foursquare have entered into a must-see TV relationship integrating show personalities and their city tips, as well as a Bravo badges, into the game experience. The New York Times Bits blog reports that the partnership officially premieres tomorrow, with Bravo offering badges and prizes to viewers that visit and check in at upwards of 500 Bravo-tagged locations.
We confirmed the relationship with Foursquare Co-Founder Dennis Crowley, who tells us that this partnership is actually just the first of many more media deals to come. In fact, Crowley hints that even more television networks will get in on the check-in gameplay in the near future. Of course Bravo is going to put the full power of its network behind the partnership, promoting Bravo's Foursquare hooks in TV spots.
Ellen Stone, Bravo's senior vice president of marketing, told The New York Times: Foursquare Check-In Stickers Coming To A Store Window Near You (Video) The social behavior incentive (how your app can be as addictive as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare) I’m an addict.
You already knew that, didn’t you? After all, I’m just about to pass my 30,000th Tweet and on Facebook I have more than 10,000 friends and on Foursquare I follow more than 3,000 people (about 1% of their user base as just reported). I’m not the only addict, though. On Google there are 402,000 results for “social media addiction.” Someone even made a rap video about social media addiction. In my journey through these systems, I’ve been seeing how each gives incentives to their users. For instance, on Foursquare every time I check in it gives me points. Twitter, on the other hand, has its own incentive system. Things that are measured become games and increase addiction. Yes, we’re all narcissists and these services use that to be very addictive. Or, look at why people hate the new Retweet Feature. So, how can you make your own app addictive? 1. Can you think of any other ways to make your applications more addictive? Foursquare: will it be bigger than Twitter?
Go back three years ago.
Twitter was being used by the same crowd that is playing with Foursquare today. What is Foursquare? It’s a location game. When I visit somewhere, like Sequoia Hospital, where I’m hanging out with Maryam (we’re having a baby sometime in the next 24 hours) I check in on Foursquare. What does that do? It sounds really lame, doesn’t it? It’s not lame. Already I’ve met people because of the game and it’s weirdly fun.
