In class, there appear to be an equal number of male and female students, and both genders seem to engage equally during lecture. One would assume that scientists, who are trained to think objectively, are completely immune to gender discrimination. However, a recent Yale study by Corinne Moss-Racusin and colleagues suggests otherwise. This image portrays a real-life look into the effects of gender bias, showing the salaries of female scientists as compared to the salaries of their male counterparts. Courtesy of Catalyst. The researchers created a fictional student and sent out the student’s application to science professors at top, research-intensive universities in the United States. This table, from the original study, indicates how differently science faculty perceived the male and female applicant with regards to competence, “hireability”, and mentoring.

Compagnon, Je voudrais vous faire part de ma perplexité. Peut-être pourriez-vous m’aider, d’ailleurs. Voyez-vous, j’ai toujours voulu être prof en collège ou lycée. J’ai réussi les concours, mais ai finalement décidé de passer mon tour pour faire une thèse et enseigner à l’université. Et puis hier, voilà que je découvre une interview de vous intitulée « Professeur, un métier sans évolution ». Ce sur quoi on vous interroge, ce qui vous inquiète, c’est le « déclassement social des enseignants ». Les métiers de l’enseignement étaient des métiers de promotion sociale. Vous attribuez donc le « déclassement » de diverses professions, celle d’enseignant·e en particulier, à leur « féminisation massive ». Un métier féminin reste encore souvent un emploi d’appoint dans un couple.

Imaginez, maintenant, ma perplexité. A vrai dire, je croyais (naïvement sans doute) que plus personne ne voyait les choses sous cet angle depuis longtemps. The infographic by Play-i reveals girls like computer science and are as good at the subject as boys. However, throw in a statement such as, ‘boys are better at computer science than girls’ and boys will perform better on computer science tests than girls. Say nothing, and boys and girls will score the same on the tests! Other stereotypes, such as computer scientists like to be alone and that computer science doesn’t help people (90pc of girls want to help people), also put girls off the topic, according to the infographic. However, parents and teachers – or anyone, for that matter – can encourage future female computer scientists by promoting role models, introducing girls to programming early on, raising awareness of stereotypes and teaching girls with social and hands-on learning activities.
