In Which Congressional Candidate Michael Halliwell Fisks the LoCO and Tongue-Slaps His Republican Competitor!

In it, we wondered if the entry of a second Republican candidate into the fray, combined with California’s new open primary system, means that we might get to witness an exciting runoff between two Democratic contenders in the November general election. Well, Halliwell takes issue. With something. This morning he sent us a long essay, complete with charts and a boffo bibliography. It’s not quite clear whether he takes our crowning of him as “Our Last, Best Republican Hope” in the sense it was intended — i.e., as a means to divide the vote and take out the race’s other Republican, and therefore to give us an actual election in the fall — or whether he thought that we thought that he actually has a chance to ascend to Congress.

To be clear, we do not think he or any other Republican has any chance whatsoever. Corral Complex Burns Over 10,000 Acres as Environmentalists, Residents, and Firefighters Disagree. After two years serving on EPIC’s Board of Directors, Gary assumed responsibilities as Executive Director of EPIC in 2011 with a deep understanding of EPIC’s program work and history, and a deep root in Humboldt County. With years of experience as a mountaineering instructor and wilderness educator for Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School, leading clients and students in some of the most spectacular wild landscapes in the continent, Gary brings a well developed and solution oriented vision to the regional debate about conservation, public participation, sustainability, and environmental ethics.

Strong Towns

We’re going to have clips and audio from the talk online soon. The talk lasted around ninety minutes and then there was some really good question and answers following. It was a serious conversation with people who are serious about Memphis. The morning after the conversation, a report appeared in the Commercial Appeal – a local newspaper – that framed the event within their lead in these terms. We obviously don’t control the media and, being married to a reporter, I personally have a deep respect for the difficulties that a reporter faces in putting a story like this together on a deadline. So I tend to cut reporters a lot of slack. This lead from the Commercial Appeal made me cringe. Orderly but Dumb. I then went on to contrast the top/down approach with what has happened on Broad Avenue in Memphis. Look what people can do when they care.
