Round 1: Knit. Round 2:[K1, M1, K to last st on circ, M1, K1] twice. Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until there are 56 [64] sts total (28 [32] sts on each needle). Continue in stockinette st until piece measures 3.25 [3.75] inches from CO edge, or until piece measures 6 inches LESS than desired total foot length. Foot & gussets: Smaller size only: Transfer two sts from both ends of N2 to N1.
The instep of the sock will be worked on N1, the sole on N2. Begin Foot Chart on N1 while continuing to work the sole sts on N2 in stockinette as established. Work until round 47 of the chart is complete (88 [96] sts total; 64 on N1, [24] 32 on N2). Next round, rearrange sts on needles to setup for heel: K1, p15 with N2. Heel: The heel will be worked back and forth only on the center 24 [32] sts of N2, ignoring the gusset sts for now).
Row 1, setup [RS]: K23 [31], wrap & turn. Row 2 [WS]: P22 [30], w&t. BO in rib patt loosely. Grace sock. Toe: Using your chosen toe-up CO method, CO 22 sts, or 11 sts on each of two needles.
Distribute sts as you prefer and join for working in the round. Divide sock into instep and sole as follows: the first 11 sts are the instep sts; the remaining 11 sts are the sole sts. Knit 1 round. Work rounds 1 through 22 of Toe Instep chart for your size over instep sts, and rounds 1 through 22 of Sole Toe chart over sole sts. 29[33] sts for instep, 27[31] for sole; 56[64] sts total. Foot: Foot round: Work appropriate size of Instep chart over 29[33] sts of instep, k across sole sts. Gusset Continuing Instep chart as established, work gusset increases as follows: Round 1: Work in pattern over 29[33] instep sts, k1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1. Heel Turn Note: the first and last of the normal heel stitches, the stitches just inside the gusset increases on either side, will be incorporated into the gusset stitches.
Heel Flap Continue to work back and forth on heel sts for heel flap. Chevrolace. TOE Using Crochet Cast On, CO 11 sts onto one circular needle.
Work 6 rows in stockinette st, beginning with a WS row and ending with a RS row. Remove waste yarn from CO edge and place resulting 11 live sts on spare needle. You may find that you have only 10 live sts; if this is the case, increase 1 st at the beginning of these sts when working the Set-up Round. Set-up Round: Using circular needle not in use, with RS facing, pick up and k 3 sts along edge of work, place marker; k11 from spare needle, place marker; pick up and k 3 sts along remaining edge of work; this needle will be designated Needle 1. Using other needle, k11. Round 1: P3, k to next marker, p3; k all sts on Needle 2. FOOT Note: Remove markers from Needle 1 when working Set-up Round. Continue in pattern until the sock reaches approx. 3 inches from the back of your heel.
TURN HEEL Work in pattern to end of Needle 1. LEG Resume working in the round over all 72 sts, beginning with next round of chart. Coupling.
