Before this week’s Open Hardware Summit gets underway tomorrow in New York City, we thought, as a warm-up, we’d highlight some of the great presentations from MAKE’s Hardware Innovation Workshop, held in Palo Alto back in May.
Like OHS, the HIW featured innovators and small-business people who are creating an open source future. There were 30 speakers in all, Here are some of the stand-out presentations. But the U.S. government has much bigger plans for the futuristic technology — it wants to reshape American manufacturing by offering up to $60 million for a new 3D printing institute. Unlike traditional factories, 3D printing technology offers the flexibility of tweaking digital designs on the fly and then rapidly "printing" the physical object on demand.
The new Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute would harness 3D printing as the first of up to 16 centers dedicated to U.S. manufacturing innovation — part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation announced by President Obama on March 9. The Department of Defense has taken the official lead on the 3D printing effort, but civilian agencies such as the Department of Energy have also promised funding. Whatever it achieves, the new institute can't expect to receive taxpayer dollars forever. LittleBits (re)intro. Tuesday, January 24, 12:30 pmBerkman Center, 23 Everett Street, second floorThis event will be webcast live at 12:30 pm ET and archived on our site shortly after.
This talk describes two projects that tackle the same issue: how and why do nonexperts contribute to innovation? The conflict between expertise and innovation sits uneasily in academia, where the enterprise hinges on doling out official credentials. But a lack of expertise can in fact drive people to create the kind of disruptive technologies that really are game-changers. In this presentation I'll present findings from a book-in-progress based on interviews with hackers and makers tentatively titled "Why Rulebreakers Will Rule the World. " That book connects the hacking and making/DIY communities at the point of disruptive technologies, demonstrating how the lack of institutional affiliation and formal credentials within each community opens up the space for creative problem-solving approaches.
