The Art of 3D Printing

Before this week’s Open Hardware Summit gets underway tomorrow in New York City, we thought, as a warm-up, we’d highlight some of the great presentations from MAKE’s Hardware Innovation Workshop, held in Palo Alto back in May. Like OHS, the HIW featured innovators and small-business people who are creating an open source future. There were 30 speakers in all, Here are some of the stand-out presentations. Nick Pinkston is the Founder of CloudFab the world’s first manufacturing-as-a-service API providing 3D printing, short-run injection molding, and mass customization interfaces. He also founded HackPittsurgh, a collective workshop, as a hub for makers. He also organizes the San Francisco Hardware Startup Meetup, Hardware Startup Unconference and is a mentor for the Thiel “20 Under 20″ Fellowship. The DIY Economy, video from last week’s Techonomy Detroit conference The DIY Economy, video from last week’s Techonomy Detroit conference Technology, economy, change, and Detroit. Last week, more than 50 leaders in today’s entrepreneurial technology scene gathered at the invitational Techonomy conference. Our own David ten Have was invited to join a panel entitled The DIY Economy: The Democratization of Finance, Design, Manufacturing, and Distribution. Fellow panelists included Grady Burnett of Facebook, Mark Hatch of TechShop, and Danae Ringelmann of Indiegogo. The idea was to feature speakers that represent each stage in creating your own business.

Today's 3D printers can already create robots and artificial body parts layer by layer based on computer designs. But the U.S. government has much bigger plans for the futuristic technology — it wants to reshape American manufacturing by offering up to $60 million for a new 3D printing institute. Unlike traditional factories, 3D printing technology offers the flexibility of tweaking digital designs on the fly and then rapidly "printing" the physical object on demand. The new Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute would harness 3D printing as the first of up to 16 centers dedicated to U.S. manufacturing innovation — part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation announced by President Obama on March 9. Hackademia: Leveraging the Conflict Between Expertise and Innovation to Create Disruptive Technologies Hackademia: Leveraging the Conflict Between Expertise and Innovation to Create Disruptive Technologies Tuesday, January 24, 12:30 pmBerkman Center, 23 Everett Street, second floorThis event will be webcast live at 12:30 pm ET and archived on our site shortly after. This talk describes two projects that tackle the same issue: how and why do nonexperts contribute to innovation? The conflict between expertise and innovation sits uneasily in academia, where the enterprise hinges on doling out official credentials. But a lack of expertise can in fact drive people to create the kind of disruptive technologies that really are game-changers.
