How I Built a Startup While Traveling to 20 Countries
One year ago, I left San Francisco, sold and gave away everything I owned, and moved into a 40-liter backpack. I traveled to 45 cities in 20 countries, three Disneylands, and one bunny island. I also worked 50 hours a week building and launching a startup. And my total costs were less than just the rent in San Francisco. Traveling is not the same as vacation There’s a growing community of “digital nomads” who live a location-independent lifestyle. I propose that a nomadic lifestyle is a productive way to build a real company. Related: A Frequent Business Traveler's Rewarding Trip to 'Nowhere' I became a nomad by accident Three years ago I was preparing to leave my job at Microsoft to move to San Francisco to build a startup. I reject the idea of a 9–5 job. I reject the idea of settling down. I reject the idea of stuff. I reject the idea of boredom. I reject the idea of a bucket list. So off I went, with my crazy new ideas about life in tow. I gave up and still moved to San Francisco.

Interview with a Torturer Rithy Panh with Christophe Bataille | Translated by John Cullen | The Elimination: A survivor of the Khmer Rouge confronts his past and the commandant of the killing fields | Other Press | February 2013 | 44 minutes (12,355 words) Below is an excerpt from the book The Elimination, by Rithy Panh, as recommended by Longreads contributor Dana Snitzky. Kaing Guek Eav, known as Comrade Duch, was the commandant of Security Prison 21—the S-21 torture and execution center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia—from 1975 to 1979. He chose his nom de guerre, he explains, from a book he remembers reading in his childhood; in the book little Duch was a “good boy.” At least 12,380 people were tortured in that prison. After the victims confessed, they were executed in the “killing field” of Choeung Ek (also under Duch’s command), about ten miles southeast of Phnom Penh.

Why America’s obsession with STEM education is dangerous If Americans are united in any conviction these days, it is that we urgently need to shift the country’s education toward the teaching of specific, technical skills. Every month, it seems, we hear about our children’s bad test scores in math and science — and about new initiatives from companies, universities or foundations to expand STEM courses (science, technology, engineering and math) and deemphasize the humanities. From President Obama on down, public officials have cautioned against pursuing degrees like art history, which are seen as expensive luxuries in today’s world.

What It Takes To Change Your Brain's Patterns After Age 25 "In most of us, by the age of thirty, the character has set like plaster, and will never soften again." That quote was made famous by Harvard psychologist William James in his 1890 book The Principles of Psychology, and is believed to be the first time modern psychology introduced the idea that one’s personality becomes fixed after a certain age. More than a century since James’s influential text, we know that, unfortunately, our brains start to solidify by the age of 25, but that, fortunately, change is still possible after.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about helping people start up with their ideas, but there are far too many wantrepreneurs in the world today. I attribute my success to one main thing: the fact that I took massive action when I had a big idea. Without that simple skill, I wouldn’t have sold a business, started numerous others, delivered a TEDx speech and found my life’s true passion. The problem is, the world will continue to be filled with wantrepreneurs unless certain things change. Here are five reasons why the world is filled with wantrepreneurs:

Harvard Unveils MRI Study Proving Meditation Literally Rebuilds The Brain’s Gray Matter In 8 Weeks Test subjects taking part in an 8-week program of mindfulness meditation showed results that astonished even the most experienced neuroscientists at Harvard University. The study was led by a Harvard-affiliated team of researchers based at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the team’s MRI scans documented for the very first time in medical history how meditation produced massive changes inside the brain’s gray matter. “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day,” says study senior author Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and a Harvard Medical School instructor in psychology. “This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.”

Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City (Legacy)US: 16 Jun 2015UK: 16 Jun 2015 Nashville might be particularly known for its sinewy girth of country music origins, standing strong as the bearer of the ceremonious Grand Ole Opry concert series for the past 90 years, featuring artists from the Binkley Brothers’ Dixie Clodhoppers to Blake Shelton in its illustrious history.
