Edtech Tools Get Creative With Formative Assessments
How can you prepare students for workplace experiences that don’t exist yet? As an educator in this digital age, that’s one of my biggest challenges. Our students now in elementary school have never had a time in their lives where mobile technology wasn't present. As the second half of the school year begins, educators around the world share a common focus on preparing our students for standardized testing. The real test is finding ways to truly get your students excited about learning and showing what they know in non-traditional ways. Kahoot.it: This is a free, game-based classroom response system. EdPuzzle: This is a free and incredible-easy-to-use video platform that helps teachers save time, boost classroom engagement and improve student learning through video lessons. Flipgrid: Although Flipgrid is not free, it is affordable--teachers pay as little as $0.22 per student. Blubbr: This lets you play and create video trivia games.

Creativity - Tools for Teaching Animoto: This application claims to be the end of slideshows and honestly, it's got a "cool factor" other tools dream of having. Easy to use, Animoto allows users to upload photos and short video clips while integrating music (choose from a vast array of pre-loaded music or upload your own) to design professional looking presentations. On the surface, Animoto doesn't look like a higher level tool, but looking at samples from other teachers there are all sorts of powerful uses for this tool. Animoto has a basic version for free, but educators can register and sign up for the All-Access Pass. Click here to view a sample Animoto a third-grade student created for the planets. Glogster EDU: Why create traditional posters when you can do so much more? There are two versions of Glogster: the standard version, which might contain objectionable material, and the education version with the EDU prefix. From an instructional perspective, teachers could use Glogster to introduce topics and units.

Prezi, Glogster & Mural.ly, oh my! Glogster prides itself on being a creative way for users to produce posters. But it's much more than just a traditional poster -- minus the glue. With the addition of animation, videos, and pictures, it allows users to create unique and interactive posters. In my opinion, Glogster's options are geared more towards upper elementary school through middle school (grades 5-9) based on it's options and "creative" stickers, animations, and graphics.
