The 23 Best Independent Movies of 2014

Whether you’re looking for a laugh, a scare, or an intellectually stimulating experience, it is bound to be found in one of the 23 indie films listed below. These are the films of 2014 that simply cannot be missed. 23. With her recent endeavors in sci-fi films, from Her to Lucy, Scarlett Johansson has proven herself to be a highly resilient and successful actress in the genre. In the film, Johansson embodies an alien predator who has taken the form of a human, using her sexually alluring nature to seduce men. Johansson’s character does this repeatedly, though the reasons for it are never made entirely clear. 22. 21. Films like Locke prove that a low budget should in no way coincide with mediocrity. 20. 19. Related:  Curaduria de CIneMoviesRückblick 2014

Generación VHS The 20 Best British Movies of The Past 5 Years The past five years have marked a changing time for British Film, increased cuts to sources of funding since the global recession are perhaps what has resulted in the number of co-productions within this list. Pinning down an exact theme or trend is difficult but there does seem to be a slightly more innovative shift away from more recognisable and colourful formulas, although still evident in some cases, to an extent this shift is instantly recognisable in the more realistic yet stylistically anachronistic mise en scene of many of the films listed. Perhaps this is to provide a longer shelf life away from cinema screens dominated with bigger budget blockbusters. Other less stylised, more immediately contemporary set films try to comment or provoke thought on social issues and choose to explore character. Here are 20 British Films from the last 5 years worth your time. 20. 19. Given the film’s 1970’s setting this conflict comes across as credible enough. 18. 17. 16. 15. Pages: 1 2 3

The 18 Best American Remakes of Foreign Movies This list contains those movies that were once the great idea of a foreign director. Now they’ve been taken in by American film makers and re-interpreted with American actors and a different cultural feel. Sometimes we watch movies and think instantly about a remake of them: what we would add, what they should have changed, what they did wrong. All of these go into how we see our remakes, and more, of course. But it is these films, most of them groundbreaking, that have exercised the idea with a spectacular flair. “Rip-off” is harsh word for a shameless retelling with no true spirit. We are not trying to say that all the remakes on this list are better than their originals, in most cases, they simply aren’t. 18. Original Version: Brødre (2004) (Denmark) It takes a lot to make an effective commentary about what hell military service can be like. Beating someone to death is one of the most gruesome and personal ways to murder. 17. Original Version: Tres hommes et un couffin (1985) (France)

The 10 Best Movies About First Love 5. Harold and Maude (Hal Ashby, 1971) The expression “like Harold and Maude”, coined by this movie, is attributed to a friendship or love-affair between a very young man and a much older woman. The two main protagonists are not only very different in age, but also in their personalities. Young Harold, offbeat, self-indulgent, suicidal, is almost the exact opposite of Maude, who is vibrant and full of life. Following the pair on their “adventures” is both hilarious and outrageous. Harold and Maude is definitely not a film for everyone. 4. Directed by Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two pre-teen lovers who run away from home together. The movie is gorgeous in its depiction of the purity and naiveté of the kids. The narrative maintains a sense of realism, but there are some funny moments of unrealistic happenings. 3. The Vampire movie is one of the most overblown in the industry. The movie is Swedish, and its tone is pretty dark. 2. 1. Pages: 1 2

The 10 Best Animated Documentaries from The Past 10 Years 5. Lipsett Diaries (Theodore Ushev, 2010) Bulgarian born Theodore Ushev happens to be as talented as any other animator working on film today. He’s been constantly proving so with works like Drux Flux (2008), Nightingales in December (2011) and Gloria Victoria (2013), just to name a few. With Lipsett Diaries, Ushev renders tribute to late experimental Canadian filmmaker Arthur Lipsett. Frames filled with paint, crayons and fragments of Lipsett’s own audiovisual efforts are ultimately implemented to produce a dark portrait that aims to recreate the mindset of a troubled individual as narrated by fellow Canadian Xavier Dolan. 4. Though, this documentary is not really animated in the technical sense of the word, its montage stems (and plays out) from one of the foundations of the animation structure. 3. One of the most critically acclaimed shorts from the festival circuit of 2010 was Madagascar, carnet de voyage. 2. 1. Pages: 1 2

14 Movies From The 2000s That Have The Potential To Be Future Cult Favorites 8. Brick (2005) High school teenager Brendan finds his former girlfriend Emily dead. This leads Brendan on an investigation of his High School to figure out what happened. Brick is probably one of the most unique mysteries to come out of the 2000s, this is mainly due to the film noir quality that it has. The idea of making a film noir set at a high school with teenager characters is the most unique aspect of this film, and feels fresh thanks to a smart script and directing by Rian Johnson. The dialogue and the character types all feel as if they came from a classic film noir, while never deviating from the fact that the characters are teenagers- and unlike a lot of other teen based mysteries like Nancy Drew-this movie is dark and exposes the gritty side of crime. Brick is a completely unique mystery that looks and feels unlike any other film made in the past decade. 9. Giant robots are attacking New York City and the world’s top scientists are disappearing. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. Pages: 1 2

15 Essential Films For An Introduction To The New French Extremity Controversy about New French Extremity rises from the term itself. Coined by critic James Quandt as a rather pejorative term to recall a series of transgressive films, mostly French, developed under the turn of 21st century, it is discussed whether it stands as a genre or not. Those in favor of a positive position face, among other things, the accusation of making a simplistic reduction of the films they tend to enlist as New French Extremity samples, making thus a difficult playground for the appreciation of the movies as well as for the public who attempts to close to them. While the recent decrease of the discussion does not mean that the matter is solved, we can partially solved the mentioned difficult playground by having some of the New French Extremity films’ common elements in mind. The next is a list of fifteen New French Extremity-associated films you should consider seeing. 15. 14. 13. Yes, Frontier(s) actually had to deal with all of it. 12. 11. 10. 9. Pages: 1 2
