Mark Jenkins // Street Installations Besançon Rome Rio de Janeiro Tudela London Dublin The 2012 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition winners Australian based photographer Martin Pugh has claimed the top prize in the Royal Observatory’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition for the second time, after originally winning the accolade back in 2009. As well as securing the £1,500 top prize, his image takes pride of place in the exhibition of winning photographs opening at the Royal Observatory Greenwich on 20 September. Pugh impressed the judges in this year’s competition with the depth and clarity of his winning shot depicting the famous Whirlpool Galaxy (M51). The image combines incredible detail in the galaxy’s spiral arms with the faint tails of light that show M51’s small companion galaxy being gradually torn apart by the gravity of its giant neighbour; a closer look also reveals more distant galaxies beyond.

The map was made by the program IOGraph, which I promptly downloaded and installed. The java app tracks user mouse movement (as lines) and stops (as dots that increase in size with duration of the stop). The result is a neat little piece of abstract art that ostensibly contains some level of information about mouse movement, but does a better job of looking cool. Apparently, there’s a bit of a tradition of using IOGraph while gaming. Check out a few more from different games after the jump.

Mountains of Books Become Mountains I thought I’d seen every type of book carving imaginable, until I ran across these jaw dropping creations by Guy Laramee. His works are so sculptural, so movingly natural in their form, they’ve really touched me. His works are inspired by a fascination with so-called progress in society: a thinking which says the book is dead, libraries are obsolete and technology is the only way of the future. His thoughts: “One might say: so what? Do we really believe that “new technologies” will change anything concerning our existential dilemma, our human condition?
