Anxiety: Getting Excited Beats Trying to Calm Down People giving public speeches and taking a stressful maths test did better when they re-thought their performance anxiety. A study on anxiety-inducing activities like public speaking finds that the intuitive response–consciously trying to calm down–isn’t the best strategy. Instead, people instructed to say to themselves, “I am excited” before a stressful ordeal, performed better. The counter-intuitive finding comes from a series of experiments conducted by Alison Wood Brooks, to be published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology (Brooks, 2013). Forget calming down Everyone knows that anxiety can hurt performance. Surely it makes sense, then, to try and calm down? In one experiment 140 participants were told to prepare a public speech. The speeches were videotaped and analysed by independent raters, who found that those who’d said “I am excited” consistently performed better than those who’d told themselves “I am calm”. A second experiment had 188 people doing a difficult maths test.

Doctoral degrees: The disposable academic ON THE evening before All Saints' Day in 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg. In those days a thesis was simply a position one wanted to argue. Luther, an Augustinian friar, asserted that Christians could not buy their way to heaven. Today a doctoral thesis is both an idea and an account of a period of original research. Writing one is the aim of the hundreds of thousands of students who embark on a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) every year. In most countries a PhD is a basic requirement for a career in academia. One thing many PhD students have in common is dissatisfaction. Whining PhD students are nothing new, but there seem to be genuine problems with the system that produces research doctorates (the practical “professional doctorates” in fields such as law, business and medicine have a more obvious value). Rich pickings Other countries are catching up. Indeed, the production of PhDs has far outstripped demand for university lecturers.

How to Deal With Stress and Anxiety: 10 Proven Psychological Techniques Ten techniques you can use to deal with stress that you can’t avoid. The best way to reduce stress is, of course, to identify the source and get rid of it. If only this were possible. Why Lead Used to Be Added To Gasoline Today I found out why lead used to be added to gasoline. “Tetraethyl lead” was used in early model cars to help reduce engine knocking, boost octane ratings, and help with wear and tear on valve seats within the motor. Due to concerns over air pollution and health risks, this type of gas was slowly phased out starting in the late 1970’s and banned altogether in all on-road vehicles in the U.S. in 1995. For a more detailed explanation of why lead used to be added to gasoline, it’s necessary to understand a little bit more about gasoline and what properties make it a good combustion material in car engines. The higher the compression in the cylinders a car’s motor can produce, the greater the power it can get out of each stroke of the piston. In 1919, Dayton Metal Products Co. merged with General Motors. Another benefit that became known over time was that Tetraethyl lead kept valve seats from becoming worn down prematurely. This hasn’t completely gotten rid of leaded gasoline.

The 8 Most Unexpected Advantages of Anxiety Anxiety can be crippling, but psychology studies find it does have some unexpected upsides. Anxiety can be crippling, but sometimes it is a crucial part of getting the best out of yourself. Artists, comedians, athletes and other performers often talk about the right amount of anxiety and how it can improve creativity and performance. But anxiety also has a number of lesser known upsides… 1. People who are feeling anxious can easily get embarrassed, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing because research shows people are more trusting. Dr. “Moderate levels of embarrassment are signs of virtue. Our data suggests embarrassment is a good thing, not something you should fight.Embarrassment is one emotional signature of a person to whom you can entrust valuable resources. It’s part of the social glue that fosters trust and cooperation in everyday life.” 2. Anxious people often say they are less likely to be injured because they are thinking ahead, but is that really true? Apparently it is. 3. 4. 5.

The Dark Side of the Moon (Landing) | earthriderdotcom Some dispute that the U.S. sent a man to the moon. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin is the second man to walk on the moon’s surface in 1969 By Judy Berman Over eight days during July 1969, all eyes were on Apollo 11, when it became the first manned mission to land on the moon. More than 40 years after this historic event, about 6 percent of Americans still dispute that we ever set foot on the moon. It fulfilled a goal set by President John F. Apollo 11 made its landing on July 20, 1969. Yet, Bill Kaysing, considered to be the father of the moon hoax, said the whole event was staged. Kaysing, himself, was not an engineer. And, yet, his story had legs. I decided to pick an engineer’s brains on this subject: my Dad. Dad had an analytical mind and addressed some of the claims in Kaysing’s book. Here’s the scoop from the web site science.howstuffworks: Conspiracy theorists also question how the flag could flap with no wind on the moon, and that the photo had to be a hoax. I just hope it’s real soon.

How To Stop Worrying Ever feel like you can’t turn your brain off? Worried about how to stop worrying? We all deal with this when life gets challenging. There is a way to overcome worry that doesn’t involve alcohol or a straitjacket. The answer is thousands of years old — but now science is validating those ancient ideas. Yeah, it’s all the rage now. Let’s fix that. You Are Not Your Thoughts What is mindfulness? Via The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems: The working definition of mindfulness that my colleagues and I find most helpful is awareness of present experience with acceptance. You might say: But I’m aware. And I’d say: No, you’re not. You’re not aware; you’re staring at your iPhone. You’re not present; you’re worrying about the future. You’re not accepting; you’re shaking your fist at traffic because the world doesn’t match the vision in your brain of how it “should” be. Very often, we’re all stuck in our heads. Mindfulness says you should go a step further. So what can you do?

Anxiety: What Causes It, How To Deal With It And Lead A Happier Life This summer, we had a wake-up call. Or rather, we would have had one, if we weren't worrying about the number of things going wrong in our lives, and feeling completely overwhelmed about how to deal with it. Anxiety, we're sorry to say, is here to stay. The Office For National Statistics, said the Guardian, revealed in a far-reaching survey that at some point, one in five Brits suffer from anxiety, depression or both. To get a handle on what anxiety is - from causes to fixes - we ask anxiety expert Rob Kelly who created The Thrive Programme, which helps people get through issues such as weight loss, depression, anxiety, phobias, smoking cessation, panic attacks and negative thinking. What causes anxiety? People tend to believe that anxiety is something that happens to them, so they often feel completely powerless to improve their situation. In particular, people’s perceptions of control are really important in determining whether or not they will create anxiety about a particular scenario.

Ancient Sumerians In Ecuador: The Father Crespi Mystery… | Hidden Inca Tours In the Amazonian Ecuadorian region called Morona Santiago there is a very deep cavern, known in Spanish as Cueva de los Tayos (Cave of the Oilbirds). According to some researchers the true discoverer of the huge archaeological treasures of the Cueva de los Tayos was not the Hungarian Juan Moricz, but rather the Salesian priest Carlo Crespi (1891-1982), a native of Milan, Italy. Carlo Crespi, who arrived to the Amazonian Ecuador area of Cuenca in 1927, was able to win the trust of the natives Jibaro, and so they did deliver to him, over decades, hundreds of fabulous archaeological pieces dating back to an unknown time, many of them made of gold or golden, often masterfully carved with archaic hieroglyphs that, to date, no one has been able to decipher. From 1960 Crespi obtained from the Vatican the permission to open a museum in the city of Cuenca, where was located his Salesian mission. We have 2 major tours of Peru and Bolivia left in 2014; see details below: Full details Here
