Creating A Text Montage May 8th, 2006 by ART-D Posted in Adobe Photoshop, Special Effects This is a technique that you have probably seen before. A face, or picture, is made up of a huge body of text, but the text is different colors or shades to make it look like the picture? Yea, it’s a really cool technique, and now you can easily re-create it. This effect looks like it would take a lot of time and effort, but in all reality it is pretty easy (just took me forever to figure out :P) and simple to do. Even the newest user should be able to re-create this effect for themselves. First, find a picture you want to convert to a text montage. Alright, now, we’re going to convert it to black and white. Alright, a box will pop up once you click Channel Mixer. Alright, now you need the text that will make up the image. Now, grab your text tool (T), and drag a rectangle over the entire image. This is just making the text closer together, and evenly spaced. Ok, now duplicate your text layer twice.

Ultimate Soup Base and a few soupy examples The beginning of any great soup is its base. Counter to what one might think, using stock, bouillon, wines or even beer just can't make up for whats provided by a good base. There are many classic soup bases, but the most adaptable is what I will be covering. Its not so much what is in the base, but rather how it is prepared, like a water colour painting it is built in transparent layers. History, well mine anyway: Going back to my Vancouver days I started as a cowboy chef, "someone brought in to inject new blood", at an Italian bakery bistro called Ecco Il Pane. The key to making so many different soups was to have a great base, something that you could turn into almost any flavor palette. Edge Lit Displays Do you ever need a cheap, quick way to make an impressive display? Do ever want to show more than a blinking LED but want something easier to use than a LCD? Do you want to make light appear to hover in mid-air? Then give some thought to edge lighting. At the last Maker Faire I had a bunch of interactive gizmos for people to play with, but one question I was asked more than any other was "How did you make those displays?" Edge lighting exploits a fun property of light called internal reflection where light can get trapped inside a transparent material. Simply put we shine a light in the edge* of a clear piece of plastic and etch it where we want the light to come out.
