How to Turn an Ordinary Photo Into an Extraordinary Photo
I’ve often been asked about my process for tweaking photos. I thought I’d use one of my favorite photos and show how I took it from initial capture to final public display. I had forgotten how far I had taken this image from its initial capture: click image to see larger version As with all tools, there are many ways to accomplish the same thing. I generally don’t like writing Photoshop tutorials, because my assumptions about everything are usually wrong. Some assumptions —You have access to Photoshop and know your way around some of the palettes. When I mention duplicating layers below, I mean you select the thumbnail/icon of the layer you want to duplicate and drag it to the New Layer button (#1 in the above illustration). —You have a photo that you’d like to tweak. —You aren’t afraid to play around with sliders and settings. Taking the picture I might muck about with some settings on the camera, but I want to capture the vision in my head as close as I can while I’m in the moment.

My current work, The Pink and Blue Projects are the topic of my thesis. This project explores the trends in cultural preferences and the differences in the tastes of children (and their parents) from diverse cultures, ethnic groups as well as gender socialization and identity. The work also raises other issues, such as the relationship between gender and consumerism, urbanization, the globalization of consumerism and the new capitalism. The Pink and Blue Projects were initiated by my five-year-old daughter, who loves the color pink so much that she wanted to wear only pink clothes and play with only pink toys and objects. I discovered that my daughter’s case was not unusual. Pink was once a color associated with masculinity, considered to be a watered down red and held the power associated with that color. The differences between girls’ objects and boys’ objects are also divided and affect their thinking and behavioral patterns. As girls grow older, their taste for pink changes.
High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography in Photoshop CS2
High dynamic range (HDR) images enable photographers to record a greater range of tonal detail than a camera could capture in a single photo. This opens up a whole new set of lighting possibilities which one might have previously avoided — for purely technical reasons. The new "merge to HDR" feature of Photoshop accomplishes this by combining a series of bracketed exposures into a single image, which encompasses the tonal detail of the entire series. There is no free lunch however; trying to broaden the tonal range will inevitably come at the expense of decreased contrast in some tones. As digital sensors attain progressively higher resolutions, and thereby successively smaller pixel sizes, the one quality of an image which does not benefit is its dynamic range. Was pink originally the color for boys and blue for girls?
December 19, 2008 Dear Cecil: I came across a piece of information that said that in the first half of the 20th century, pink was a boy's color while blue was a girl's color. By midcentury baby clothing in colors other than white had begun to appear, but gender-based distinctions were slow to emerge. The Green Flash Effect
Definition and description The green flash is an atmospheric refractive phenomenon where the top edge of the Sun will momentarily turn green. It is seen rarely by the naked eye, primarily because it requires specific conditions to occur, but also because it requires the observer to know what to look for. Despite the name, there is no "flash"; the event only lasts from a fraction of a second to at the longest, a few seconds. The basic cause for the green flash is that refraction bends the light of the Sun. What conditions are required to see the green flash? Although Mount Wilson Observatory is near Los Angeles the green flash is frequently observed here, because the elevation of the mountain (5710 ft, 1740.4m) places it above the inversion layer. OK, then, why is it called a "green" flash and not a "blue" flash? Actually, all celestial objects experience the same effect near the horizon; it is possible to see "green flashes" from the setting Moon, Venus, or bright stars like Sirius.
