Mundtlig kommunikation kan foregå i direkte samtale og aflytning af lydspor på film, indtaling af podcasts og at lytte til et foredrag. Mundtligt sprog er ofte karakteriseret ved at være mindre komplekst end skriftligt sprog, og det indeholder ofte gentagelser og omformuleringer, fordi vi i mundtlige situationer kan støtte os til en samtalepartner og til rammerne for situationen. Hvis en elev fx siger: ”Lunch?”, vil det være muligt at forstå elevens hensigt, hvis det foregår i slutningen af en lektion, og det lige har ringet. Hvis det skrives, skal der langt mere sprog til, for at elevens udsagn bliver forståeligt. Undervisningen skal lægge sig tæt op ad autentisk mundtlig kommunikation, så korte sætninger, omformuleringer og simple konstruktioner vil naturligt indgå.
