A SAN does not provide file abstraction, only block-level operations. However, file systems built on top of SANs do provide file-level access, and are known as SAN filesystems or shared disk file systems. SAN (storage-area network): A high-speed network of interconnected storage devices. These storage devices might be servers, optical disc drives, or other storage media. The difference between a SAN and an NAS (Network Attached Storage) is that a SAN runs at a higher speed than an NAS, while an NAS is generally easier to install and provides a file system.
