Design and the Elastic Mind - MoMA

Claude Prouvé’s recently demolished Experimental Building of SIRH Mid-March brought the destruction of an important 1970s building that symbolized the experimental nature of industrialized housing that became popular after World War II as an effort to meet the economic demands of reconstruction. Known as the “experimental building of SIRH”, the eight storey abandoned structure was created by sixty prefabricated modules that served as a prototype for the SIRH Process – a construction process that experimented with the idea of prefabricating flexible standard living cells that could be easily assembled on site in a unlimited amount of configurations to provide for affordable individual or collective dwellings. This process was designed by French architect Claude Prouvé – son of the illustrious French architect, designer and metal worker Jean Prouvé, who is widely known for successfully and beautifully transferring manufacturing technology from industry to architecture. Le cycle Bonheur (1ère partie) Les Nouveaux Chemins de la connaissance Date de diffusion : 26.08.2008 Invité : Robert Misrahi (professeur émérite de philosophie éthique à Paris 1) Badel Block Complex Proposal / SANGRAD Architects + AVP Arhitekti The design proposal by SANGRAD Architects + AVP Arhitekti for the Badel Block Complex, a mixed-use project within the city center of Zagreb, Croatia, consists of enclosing the continuity of the existing block and positioning the vertical into its center. Following the instinct of creating a free, public space as large as possible, and yet also in keeping with the proposed program, with uniform treatment of the existing urban archaeology, represents the main guidelines of this concept. More images and architects’ description after the break. The proposed site consists of a large urban block, entirely defined by Vlaška Street and Kvaternik Square, and partly defined by Šubićeva and Derenčinova streets. Its particularity is determined by layers of different genesis, segmented elements of the block dating back to the late 19th century, as well as from the 1970s and 1980s, and including a smaller object of a more recent date. Vânia Coelho Santos  /  Portfólio de Arquitectura New York City’s first Kahn Structure nears Completion Nearly 40 years after Welfare Island was renamed to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), the Four Freedoms Park is nearly complete. The four-acre park, located on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City, honors the 32nd U.S. President and the four essential freedoms he believed in. Continue after the break to learn about the story and design of Four Freedoms Park. During a period of urban renewal in the late 1960s, New York City Mayor John Lindsay proposed reinvent the beloved island, stating: “It has long seemed to us that an ideal place for a memorial to FDR would be on Welfare Island, which…could be easily renamed in his honor… It would face the sea he loved, the Atlantic he bridged, the Europe he helped to save, the United Nations he inspired.” One aspect of the Roosevelt philosophy that seemed especially powerful to Kahn was FDR’s belief that all disputes could be solved with a peaceful discussion, similarly to a family sitting around the dinner table.
