Rosen A photography project reminds us that soldiers surrendered and prisoners marched on the same streets we walk along every day. January 27, 1945, Auschwitz (Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse) "It is a bit like painting with history," says Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse. She got the idea for her project, "Ghost of History," a few years ago when she found some old negatives at a flea market in Amsterdam, where she lives. The process for making the images is pretty simple. Upper image unknown; lower image Tom Timmermans The hope is to get people to "stop and think about history, about the hidden and sometimes forgotten stories of where they live." One the images she believes is the most interesting is this one taken on Rue Armand Levéel in Cherbourg, France. Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse In this image, of soldiers running across a the Avenue de Paris in Cherbourg, she's made the last man of the bunch more transparent, as though to suggest that perhaps he didn't make it. Flying Girl in Photoshop A few weeks ago I published a tutorial called Girl in Tempo. I used the new version of Pixelmator that had the codename Tempo. The result was really nice and I got a very positive feedback, and, also some emails asking me to do that tutorial in Adobe Photoshop. In this tutorial we will use some stock photos and mix them together to create a nice effect. Step 1 Create a new document in Photoshop, as usual I used 1920x1200 pixels. Step 2 Here I used a photo from iStockphoto, Step 3 Duplicate the girl's layer and hide one. Step 4 Duplicate the hidden layer with the color girl layer. Step 5 Duplicate again the color copy of the girl layer. Step 6 Select the color girl layer, the one that is behind the others and just add a Gaussian Blur, use 40 pixels for the Radius and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. Select the 4 layers we created for the girl and group them. Step 7 Select the Gradient Tool (G) and then go to the Gradient Editor. Step 8 Step 9

The warp tool will be used to create the twisting effect (so, you need Photoshop CS2 or above to complete this tutorial). With the completion of this tutorial, you will be able build a photo strip with your own photos or artwork. View Final Image Download Photoshop File 1. First, create a strip with the Pen tool (either in Photoshop or Illustrator). 2. Choose 3 photos of your choice and stack them together. 3. Adjust the layer opacity to 40 or 50% so you can see the guideline underneath. Repeat this step for the rest of the strip. 4. Organize the layers into groups (ie. strip 1, 2, 3, 4). Load selection from the shapes you created in step 1 and add a layer mask for each group (so you get a perfect smooth curve). 5. In masked group 1, create a new layer above the strip.
