European Disability Forum The right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health without discrimination on the basis of disability is a fundamental right enshrined in article 25 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. However, it is far from being a reality for millions of persons with disabilities who tend to receive health care of lower quality that is not adapted to their needs. The inaccessibility of health care facilities, the lack of accessible information about health care services and entitlements, the lack of adequate training and flexibility for health care professionals, misconceptions about the health care needs of persons with disabilities and discriminatory treatment against persons with disabilities by private health insurances have been identified as major barriers in accessing health care. In the health field, the EU shares competence with EU Member States.

UN Women was established in July 2010 by the General Assembly (res. 64/289) to improve the coordination and coherence of gender equality and empowerment of women, and promote more effective gender mainstreaming across the UN system. It consolidated the work of four UN gender entities: the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Division for the Advancement of Women, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women. It has an additional role of leading, coordinating and promoting the accountability of the UN system in its work on gender equality and the empowerment of women. by jerry_jenkins Dec 12
