Mounting the CCD Camera There are quite a few different ways to attach a CCD camera to a telescope. No matter where you are mounting the camera, there are a few important tips which are universal: Keep the CCD camera square to the axes of the telescope mount. Tip: Some focusers have only one set screw for holding a CCD camera in place. Accessories The most common CCD imaging accessory (aside from camera accessories like color wheels) is a focal reducer. Most SCTs have focal reducers which thread on to the rear cell of the telescope and convert them to f/6.3 or f/3.3. The best solution is to use a 2" camera adapter, intended for mounting a 35mm camera to a 2" focuser. Astronomy Picture of the Day CCD Imaging Equipment Starlight Xpress MX516 Monochrome CCD Camera The Starlight Xpress MX516 Monochrome CCD camera was the first CCD camera that I owned. For its cost its performance was very good. The MX516 is extremely compact. SBIG ST-7E CCD Camera The SBIG ST-7E CCD Camera is much more expensive than the Starlight Xpress MX516 but has more capabilities. First, let's discuss self-guiding. Now lets look at image binning. Finally, lets look at programmable cooling. The overall quantum efficiency (sensitivity) of the ST-7E seems to be higher than the MX516. One other difference between the MX516 and the ST7E is the shutter. SBIG ST-2000XM CCD Camera I purchased the SBIG ST-2000XM CCD Camera in November 2005.
