He is the CEO of Magnify.net, a real-time video curation engine for publishers, brands, and websites. His book Curation Nation is slated to be published this spring by McGrawHill Business. As the volume of content swirling around the web continues to grow, we're finding ourselves drowning in a deluge of data. Where is the relevant material? Where are the best columns and content offerings? The solution on the horizon is curation. In the past 90 days alone, there has been an explosion of new software offerings that are the early leaders in the curation tools category. 1. TikiToki: Beautiful web-based timeline software NASA Latest Discovery: the Brightest Dead Star | Wall Street OTC NASA announced a new discovery while looking at distant galaxies. The bright dead star is actual the brightest one ever discovered and NASA said that its energy is the equivalent of 10 million suns. The NASA latest discovery raises some more questions about the mysterious black holes. The NuStar telescope picked up bright X-rays form a source of ultraluminous X-rays called M82 X-2. The NASA latest discovery has the energy of 10 million suns, which means it’s 10 times more than other pulsars discovered so far. Fiona Harrison from the California Institute of Technology named the NASA latest discovery “Mighty Mouse” and said that “It has all the power of a black hole, but with much less mass.” Astronomers believe that the light coming from the dead star is caused by the fact that the gravity of neutron stars feeds on the matter of the companion stars. Harrison explained: “The pulsar appears to be eating the equivalent of a black hole diet.

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice | Ibrar's space I have been writing my PhD so haven’t updated this blog for a while. Thesis writing is taking up a lot of my mental space as I get the ideas, storyline and contentions to ‘coalesce’ and cohere in a manner suitable for such a piece of work. I’ve been mulling over a series of ideas in my analysis of digital literacies, and one of them is the concept and practice of ‘curation’ as a digital literacy, and what the implications are for curation practices to be better understood, theorised, and subsequently harnessed for educational purposes. My PhD thesis (Bhatt, forthcoming) is not fully completed yet, but some ideas are worth throwing out to collide with others as part of what I believe is a public conversation (#impact #engagement). [Aside: see this brief lecture by Steven Johnson on the ‘collision’ of ideas and the sharing of half-baked hunches] Back to the topic: Source: References: Bhatt, I. Tufte, E. Like this:

Alcohol and Energy Drinks A Dangerous Combo, Study Says In a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, researchers at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan have concluded that mixing alcohol and energy drinks poses a serious public health risk, especially among college students. "We found that college students tended to drink more heavily, become more intoxicated, and have more negative drinking consequences on days they used both energy drinks and alcohol, compared to days they only used alcohol," said Megan Patrick, a research assistant professor and co-author of the study. According to the study, students who either drank alcohol and energy drinks on the same day or who combined the two at the same time wound up spending more time drinking – thus consuming more alcohol – than they would have without the caffeinated drinks. The result of spending more hours drinking raised users' blood alcohol levels to higher peaks.
