Care4Care | Nesta Innovation in Giving Care4Care was a membership organisation where members spent a few hours a week supporting an older person in their local community – in return building up their own ‘care pension’. The idea was to provide support for older people through a system of exchange: members would support an older person now in return for being supported later in life. Time spent helping an older person earned an equivalent time credit (calculated in 15 minute segments). Care4Care was a collaboration between Professor Heinz Wolff, The Young Foundation and Age UK, Isle of Wight. Update: Despite early signs of promise and a successful trial on the Isle of Wight, the venture did not prove to be sustainable or scalable long-term, and Care4Care is unfortunately no longer running. You can read about the challenges faced by Care4Care, the lessons learned from the project and insights into what type of ‘reciprocal timebanking’ service could be more effective in this space here:

As Online Ed Grows in BC, Who's Left Behind? Distance learning saves province money and can free students' schedules. But some families are more wired than others. Is she too young to be schooled this way? Kids in B.C. can now take almost every course required in K to 12 online, from math and science to social studies and art, even physical education, thanks to the Ministry of Education's Distributive Learning initiative. But public education advocates say pushing online learning for everyone could erode the universal access and quality of education in this province. Helesia Luke is one such advocate. "The things she was doing online, they were pretty demanding in terms of understanding how online learning works, and actually things that aren't necessarily obvious when you're in Grade 10, like going to the Conference Board of Canada's website, for example, or getting a question like 'Think of a time when you had a conflict with a coworker and how did you handle it?'" 53,000 BC students added in five years Accessibility issues
