Top 10 Mistakes in Behavior Change

Why strategists should make stuff | Life. Then strategy Strategy | Comments | Last built on 8 July, 2010 I was recently asked this question by Brazilian account planner, Carlos Vilela: What’s your best advice for the next generation of young and ambitious account planners and strategists? I’ll always see myself as an up-and-comer so on one hand it’s an odd question to field… and a tough one to answer single-mindedly. My answer though… The first thing I look for on an account planner or digital strategist’s resume is proof of what that person has done and made of their own accord in the past – outside of advertising. There are a lot of smart people ‘learning advertising’ – university, ad schools – but I actually get a little suspicious of this sort. Here’s why… 1. One thing that frustrates me in ad world is the phrase ‘limited budget’. I set up a hip hop magazine when I was 20. You can read about that journey here: 10 things about trying. 2. 3. The way agencies are evolving, departments will matter less and less. 4. 5. This is snake oil stuff. 6.

School of the Future: Unschooling Education - Education What do you want to learn? School of the Future is a project about what a school can be. This un-school will facilitate a model of apprenticeship and collaborative learning that questions what we know and how we learn. The mission and hypothesis is that the best learner-teachers are the best teacher-learners. School of the Future is an ongoing experiment that can happen anywhere, at anytime. From solar-powered lighting to a giant scrabble board, Tyvek mountains and experimental food sculptures, the School of the Future is an invitation to experiment and analyze learning through the arts. During the school's July 2010 semester, a research document will be created and distributed in collaboration with the School's student body and teaching staff. Interested in helping us build the School of the Future? Christopher Kennedy is the Director of the Institute for Applied Aesthetics, an experimental school for research and learning in Brooklyn.

The Power of Negative Thinking Lie back and picture life after your ambitions are fulfilled, the motivational gurus used to say, and you’ll bring that end result closer to reality. Make an effort to visualize every detail – the finished screenplay sitting pretty on your desk, the gushing reviews in the paper, the sports car parked outside. The gurus claimed these images would galvanize your determination. They said you could use the power of positive thinking to will success to happen. But then some important research came along that muddied the rosy picture. Gabriele Oettingen’s psychology lab at New York University has shown that visualizing our aims as already achieved can backfire. In the study, volunteers felt de-energized after visualizing success in an essay competition. Why Picturing Future Obstacles Actually Helps A related problem with picturing what life will be like after we’ve achieved our goals is that it encourages us to gloss over the obstacles to success that are standing in our way. What’s Your Take?

Why some men are so lost | Life. Then strategy Life | Comments | Last built on 1 July, 2009 This article originally happened in 2009 for Man Week, a campaign by Reachout to raise awareness about men and mental health issues. It led to a 2012 TEDx talk, The World Would Be Less Strange If We Stopped Making Strangers Out of Men Isn’t it interesting that the current Man Week campaign from Reachout to get young guys to open up is challenging guys to be tough enough to reveal themselves? Isn’t this ‘man enough’ ideal the problem? So, isn’t using it to challenge guys to talk still keeping the issue in the very construct that’s doing them harm? Ah, Man Week, how I love thee. Some personal background I’m really interested in manhood stuff. My parents split when I was young. My parents are good people. The first was a feeling of permanent vulnerability The second thing I felt hollow about was trust I didn’t trust anyone. So what are some of the issues facing male-dom? 1. Being a teenager and young man is almost entirely about physicality. 2. 3. 4.

Dealing with depression at Christmas | Life. Then strategy Life | Comments | Last built on 17 December, 2009 Dealing with depression – directly or indirectly – is something many of us have to confront at some point in our lives. This post won’t be for everyone but I feel compelled to write it anyway… mainly because I couldn’t find anything to read when I needed it. Manchild About 4 years ago, I nearly imploded. I still remember over-hearing a parent when I was in third class point me out in a group of kids as ‘the one’ with parents who were split up. In primary school, I was convinced I had migraine headaches all the time. My school reports always talked about my ‘rough corners’ that needed ‘smoothing out’. As a teenager (and even beyond) I struggled to relate to people who came from families that appeared to me (often entirely superficially) to be ‘normal’. In high school, we had a system where a group of 15 or so of us would meet the same teacher before lunch every day for 4 years. I stuck up my hand. Depression at Christmas – 2005 Counselling So

Active Twitter Users Have Shorter Relationships [STATS] The romantic relationships of active Twitter users apparently don't last as long as the rest of the population, according to stats published by dating website OkCupid. The site, which regularly publishes information about dating trends and statistics, has compiled a number of charts about the sexual habits of its millions of users. The website determines dating compatibility based on how users answer thousands of questions. Among OkCupid's findings are two conclusions about Twitter users. The first one: People who use Twitter every day tend to have shorter relationships, and the problem gets worse as a person gets older, according to its analysis of 833,987 OkCupid users. The average relationship for an 18-year-old who uses Twitter is about nine months, while "everybody else" usually has a relationship average of nine-and-a-half months. The dating website has another conclusion that is sure to catch some eyeballs.
