(The Washington Post) Earlier this year, I wrote about teaching empathy, and whether you are a parent who does so. I know, you’d think they are or that parents are teaching that themselves, right? “Children are not born simply good or bad and we should never give up on them.

Good Reasons to Quit Homeschooling There are some times when some homeschooling parents should decide to quit homeschooling. We’re used to cheerleading for homeschooling and supporting homeschoolers through temporary hard times. We’re accustomed to supporting people who have short-term or medium-term misgivings about homeschooling, but their kids are really doing fine, and they’re really doing fine. But if we’re really going to be “Homeschoolers Helping Homeschoolers,” as I’ve been writing about in this series, then we also have to provide support for homeschoolers who are making the decision to quit. What are some good reasons to quit homeschooling? Homeschoolers in these situations should be supported in making decisions not to homeschool. But in general, sometimes the decision not to homeschool is something homeschoolers need to acknowledge as sometimes positive for a family. What can you say? “You feel your kids will be better off in school. “Things have changed for you, and you don’t feel homeschooling is best any more.”

The Trouble With Bright Girls Successful women know only too well that in any male-dominated profession, we often find ourselves at a distinct disadvantage. We are routinely underestimated, underutilized, and even underpaid. Studies show that women need to perform at extraordinarily high levels, just to appear moderately competent compared to our male coworkers. But in my experience, smart and talented women rarely realize that one of the toughest hurdles they'll have to overcome to be successful lies within. We judge our own abilities not only more harshly, but fundamentally differently, than men do. Chances are good that if you are a successful professional today, you were a pretty bright fifth grade girl. She found that bright girls, when given something to learn that was particularly foreign or complex, were quick to give up--and the higher the girls' IQ, the more likely they were to throw in the towel. Why does this happen? How do girls and boys develop these different views?

The Myth of the Starving Artist When I was a little kid, my mom sent me to lots of extra-curricular activites (as any Indian/Asian mom does). One of these was art school. After an art session one day, I brought home my drawing of a tree. It was so bad that my normally supportive mom actually said, “Umm…if you’re going to draw a tree, why don’t you make it look like a tree?” This explains a lot about why I hate artists (and most non-profits). Not just because I hate art, but because artists are terrible at marketing themselves and constantly adopt worthless beliefs like: “Charging for my art is selling out”“Good art markets itself”“My goal is to get in a gallery” I wrote about this in detail when I wrote Attention Whiners: Why you STILL aren’t saving money and highlighted that it’s not tactics, but mindset that often separates people who do from people who whine. Cory, take it away. Last week I heard a story about an artist who makes handmade buttons at parties. For $3. I couldn’t believe it. What’s the difference?

The Science Of Spanking: What Happens To Spanked Kids When They Grow Up? You know what the most annoying thing in the world is when you are a parent? Other people telling you what to do as if they know better. Backseat parenting drives me crazy. Until I'm the one doing it. I have dear friends who spank their kids, and I always try to talk to them about the science of it. However, during those discussions, I'd say there is science that backs up doing something other than spanking. The biggest takeaway for me? Click the image to see it in closer detail. Click image to Zoom For those of you who spank your kids, let me just declare: I am in no way attacking your parenting skills or blaming you for anything. Maybe it's what you grew up with. I think we can all agree that we want what is best for our children.

The Day I Realized I Was Bullying My Kids This post is brought to you by Playful Learning. I was being a bully… I watched the kids’ video from Playful Learning Put Ups and Put Downs Course with my kids, thinking it would be helpful for them, hopefully help us decrease sibling squabbles. I didn’t realize I would get an emotional 2×4 to the head as I listened to the description of Put Downs. In a Parenting Rut For most of the summer I had been doing great on not yelling, on enjoying my kids and having a good handle on my anger triggers, but after some emotional upsets and long days alone with the kids I was operating on a short fuse. In the video, kids describe both verbal and non-verbal Put Downs. I suddenly saw my own yelling at my kids as a bunch of Put Downs. Yelling wasn’t effective teaching. I had heard my son describe yelling like “being hit“ before. The tough part is that sometimes kids are….well, really annoying. and button pushing. and limit testing. Instead of Yelling – Put Ups for My Kids Using Put Ups to Reset
