Sarah Palin's Nomination Chances: A Reassessment In November 2009, I wrote an article entitled “10 Reasons That Sarah Palin Could Win the Republican Nomination.” The article wasn’t necessarily arguing that she was the favorite to take the nomination, but it did suggest she had a credible chance at it. In light of the developments of the last 13 months, it is probably worthwhile to revisit that assessment. Do these reasons still hold? Assuming that she runs, are her chances at becoming the Republican nominee stronger or weaker than they were a year ago? Let’s examine each of my original arguments in some detail. 1. Enthusiasm is difficult to discern in surveys: pollsters generally have more trouble anticipating who exactly is going to vote than which candidate they might vote for, especially in primaries where participation rates are relatively low. What’s a bit unusual for Ms. On the one hand, this could lead to underestimating support for Ms. On the other hand, she may need to actuate that support with get-out-the-vote efforts. Ms.

'A big f------ deal' and more: The top 10 political quotes of 2010 Vice President Joe Biden’s use of profanity, a New York congressman’s admission of groping and a denial of witchcraft were among the top 10 political quotes of 2010. The healthcare reform debate is featured in several others, ranging from a Texas lawmaker’s outburst of “baby killer” to President Obama’s admission that he and his party took a “shellacking” in the midterm elections. Democrats were jubilant after they narrowly passed the healthcare bill in March, as evidenced by Biden’s comment to Obama that it was “a big f------ deal.” While Democrats won that legislative battle, Republicans won the message war on healthcare, capturing control of the House and reducing the Democrats’ majority in the Senate in the November elections. The top 10 political quotes of the year follow in chronological order. “Not true.” Alito mouthed these words as Obama ripped the Supreme Court for its decision in the high-profile Citizens United case. “Yes, I did. “Baby killer!” “This is a big f------ deal.”

2011 looks grim for progress on women's rights in Iraq BAGHDAD — When Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki introduced what he called a national partnership government two weeks ago, he included allies and adversaries, Arabs and Kurds, Shiite Muslims and Sunnis. One group, however, was woefully underrepresented. Only one woman was named to Maliki's 42-member cabinet, sparking an outcry in a country that once was a beacon for women's rights in the Arab world and adding to an ongoing struggle over the identity of the new Iraq. Whether this fledgling nation becomes a liberal democracy or an Islamist-led patriarchy might well be judged by the place it affords its women. Nearly eight years after American-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, Iraq's record is decidedly mixed. Maliki's last cabinet included four women, and since 2005 the Iraqi constitution has set aside one-quarter of legislative seats for females. "It's a mockery," said Hanaa Edwar, a founder of the Iraqi al Amal Association, a leading women's rights group.

Egypt bomb kills new year churchgoers | World news A man observes the scene of the bomb blast from within the Coptic church in Alexandria, Egypt. Photograph: Ben Curtis/AP At least 21 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in Egypt in a suspected suicide bombing outside a church in Alexandria as worshippers left a new year service. It was initially thought a car bomb had caused the explosion just after midnight at the Coptic orthodox al-Qidiseen church. The blast did not originate in any of the cars that were destroyed, a ministry statement said. The circumstances of the attack "clearly indicates that foreign elements undertook planning and execution", the statement said. The governor of Alexandria, Adel Labib, accused al-Qaida of planning the bombing. His assessment was shared by Kameel Sadeeq of the city's Coptic Christian council. Senior health ministry official Osama Abdel-Moneim said the death toll stood at 21 – a figure also reported by the state media – and at least 79 had been wounded.

Why We Desperately Need a New (and Better) Google This semester, my students at the School of Information at UC-Berkeley researched the VC system from the perspective of company founders. We prepared a detailed survey; randomly selected 500 companies from a venture database; and set out to contact the founders. Thanks to Reid Hoffman, we were able to get premium access to LinkedIn—which was very helpful and provided a wealth of information. But some of the founders didn’t have LinkedIn accounts, and others didn’t respond to our LinkedIn “inmails”. But it turns out that you can’t easily do such searches in Google any more. We ended up using instead a web-search tool called Blekko. Blekko was founded in 2007 by Rich Skrenta, Tom Annau, Mike Markson, and a bunch of former Google and Yahoo engineers. In addition to providing regular search capabilities like Google’s, Blekko allows you to define what it calls “slashtags” and filter the information you retrieve according to your own criteria.
