Reddit /r/technology in NSA, Bitcoin and Snowden censoring controversy Reddit users aren’t as happy as their logo is. Source: Supplied THE social news website Reddit is in damage control after it was discovered that the site’s moderators have been censoring any posts that include popular terms such as “NSA,” “Snowden” and “Bitcoin”. Users discovered the glitch when they tried to submit stories that mentioned any of these words or a long list of others in the /r/technology thread which is followed by around five million Reddit users. The story would be removed without notification within minutes of it appearing on the site. Reddit admitted to the BBC that the reason for the disappearing posts was due to moderators of the section who placed a filter which automatically deleted posts with the banned words because they didn’t want to deal with the amount of stories submitted on the controversial topics. Because of this, /r/technology has been downgraded which means it will no longer be a default subreddit and posts won’t appear on the site’s homepage.

Social Media Implications of 2013 SEO Ranking Factors Report Author: Angie Pascale The 2013 Search Ranking Factors – Rank Correlation Report by SearchMetrics was released a few weeks ago, with some interesting findings for content, SEO and social media campaigns. What caught my attention, and has created some healthy debate here at Location3 and in the industry, is the high placement of social signals. According to the study, which was based on search results from a keyword set of 10,000 search terms from Google USA, seven of the top ten ranking factors are social, with Google +1s ranking the highest. Throughout the report, SearchMetrics reiterated that correlation is not causation, and thus this data must be used as guidance and not as a revelation of the mysterious Google ranking algorithm. Authorship, an extremely hot topic in the digital world right now, was also addressed in the report. So what does this all mean for brands today? Download the full (70 page!) 3 Metrics for Measuring Twitter Hashtag Performance You want a quick ‘n’ dirty idea of how your ultra-creative, perfectly-planned hashtag campaign is doing on Twitter. The trouble is, you don’t even know what you mean by “how it’s doing.” What does a meaningful bird’s eye view require? Let’s use the classic “What would you bring to a deserted island if you could only bring three things?” scenario. If you must choose three metrics to take with you to Twitter Island, I suggest one that’s essential, one that dives deep, and one that’s purely comparative – or to put it in Twitter context: Number of mentionsPotential impressionsRelative volume Why these three metrics? How many times your hashtag is used: Stream Tweets Over Time I got my numbers here by running a Twitter Activity Report and looking at the “Stream Tweets Over Time” section, but you can do it any way you want; manually or otherwise. How many times your hashtag is viewed: Potential Impressions So now you know how many times your hashtag has been used.
