How to prevent wasps from nesting on your property VICTORIA – Barbecues and backyard gatherings are a summertime staple in Canada, and so are wasps, the uninvited guests with a painful sting. As the season continues, wasps become more aggressive and homeowners may begin to notice more nests around their property. Kurtis Brown, technical supervisor at Victoria Pest Control, says while his business is dealing with between 10 and 15 wasp nests per day, it is hard to quantify whether there are more of the insects this season. “As we approach peak summer time, and we get that nice heat wave, wasps really start to develop and nests really start to take off,” says Brown. “People are certainly noticing a few more wasps than usual.” These varieties of wasps tend to make their nests in holes and crevices.

This includes complete ecological units that function as natural systems without massive human intervention, including all vegetation, animals, microorganisms, rocks, atmosphere and natural phenomena that occur within their boundaries. And it includes universal natural resources and physical phenomena that lack clear-cut boundaries, such as air, water, and climate, as well as energy, radiation, electric charge, and magnetism, not originating from human activity. Earth Overshoot Day In 8 Months, Humanity Exhausts Earth's Budget for the Year August 20 is Earth Overshoot Day 2013, marking the date when humanity exhausted nature’s budget for the year. We are now operating in overdraft. For the rest of the year, we will maintain our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. vOITURE CAR RAPPEL RECALL - How to check if your car was recalled but not fixed - LA Times Car owners and buyers will be able to look up whether a vehicle has been recalled and fixed under a new federal program launched late Tuesday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed an online search tool where drivers can find out if a specific car has been recalled and why. The car companies will have to provide at least 15 years of data for the tool, at and update their information every seven days. The program comes as manufacturers are recalling millions more vehicles than at any other time in U.S. history, about 46 million vehicles so far this year. That's almost 1 of every 5 cars in the U.S. and eclipses the annual recall record of 30.8 million vehicles set in 2004.

Answer Is Now a Click Away - NYTimes.com Photo A new online search tool allows consumers to type in a vehicle identification number, or VIN, to check on whether recall repairs have been completed on a specific car, truck or motorcycle. The service, which began Wednesday, is available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website or the sites of individual automakers. The free search tool lets consumers quickly learn whether a vehicle they are considering for purchase has a safety problem that has not been addressed. Recalled vehicles can be repaired without charge at franchised dealers. This is the first time consumers will be able to use a VIN on the safety agency’s site to determine whether a recall issue has been addressed on a particular car.

ScienceBase - Maps [eng] High-latitude regions are experiencing rapid and extensive changes in ecosystem composition and function as the result of increases in average air temperature. Increasing air temperatures have led to widespread thawing and degradation of permafrost, which in turn has affected ecosystems, socioeconomics, and the carbon cycle of high latitudes. Research shows that the distribution of permafrost is heterogeneous in nature and that permafrost responds to a wide range of ecological factors. Here we overcome complex interactions between surface and subsurface conditions to map near-surface permafrost using decision-tree models, field observations, remotely sensed and derived data, and climatic indices. The resultant dataset...
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - National CHM for the Republic of Zambia Zambia has ratified more than twenty (20) Global Environmental Conventions that play an important role in influencing the country's policies, laws and actions so as to attain sustainable socio-economic development through the environment and natural resources management. In order for key players in environmental protection and natural resources management including the local communities to acquire basic knowledge and understanding on these conventions, there is need to disseminate issues related to different conventions to which Zambia is a party. Zambia lies at the heart of the Miombo Ecoregion and it is listed as the World Wide Fund (WWF) Global 2000 Ecoregion because of its high species richness. The Miombo Ecoregion supports important populations of fauna, particularly large mammals. Zambia is floristically diverse and has 8,500 plant species, of which about 54% are endemic.
