How to combine backgrounds and colors When you start designing something new, it’s always hard to find the correct combination of background and text colors that complement each other to achieve a clean design that is legible and easy to understand. In this article we’re going to discuss a few easy to follow rules that will help you to design more professional text based graphics 1. Contrast One of the most important rules to follow when combining text with backgrounds is to have good contrast. Free: Download 5.3 Million Images from Books Published Over Last 500 Years Back in 2014, we brought to your attention an image archive rivaling the largest of its kind on the web: the Internet Archive Book Images collection at Flickr. There, you’ll find millions of “public domain images, all extracted from books, magazines and newspapers published over a 500 year period.” At the time, the collection contained 2.6 million public domain images, but “eventually,” wrote our editor Dan Colman, “this archive will grow to 14.6 million images.” Well, it has almost doubled in size since our first post, and it now features over 5.3 million images, thanks again to Kalev Leetaru, who headed the digitization project while on a Yahoo-sponsored fellowship at Georgetown University. Rather than using optical character recognition (OCR), as most digitization software does to scan only the text of books, Leetaru’s code reversed the process, extracting the images the Internet Archive’s OCR typically ignores. The long history of Muslims and Christians killing people together In 1683, a vast Ottoman army camped outside the gates of Vienna. For centuries thereafter, the siege and final decisive battle that took place would be cast as a defining moment in a clash of civilizations -- that time the forces of Islam were halted at the ramparts of Christendom. Yet look just a little bit harder, and that tidy narrative falls apart. 700 Free Movies Online: Great Classics, Indies, Noir, Westerns Free Comedy & Dramas 175 Paramount Films on Paramount’s Official YouTube Channel – Free – The Paramount Vault now streams on its official YouTube channel 175 free feature films. Professor Emeritus, Medieval History, University of Kansas Please take into consideration the purpose and audience for which the lecture notes listed above were written. For a good many years, I taught a three-credit-hour freshman survey entitled Introduction to Medieval History to enrollments of room-size - generally three hundred students. During those years, the University of Kansas maintained an open enrollment policy in which all graduates from accredited Kansas high schools were admitted to the University. Solving the Enigma of Petra and the Nabataeans This Bible History Daily article was originally published in 2012. It has been updated.—Ed. Who were the Nabataeans? The Siq is a tortuous half-mile-long canyon that winds its way from the entrance of Petra to the large open plaza at the foot of the Khazneh.

Download 35,000 Works of Art from the National Gallery, Including Masterpieces by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Rembrandt & More As a young amateur painter and future art school dropout, I frequently found myself haunted by the faces of two artists, that famously odd couple from my favorite art history novelization—and Kirk Douglas role and Iggy Pop song—Lust for Life. Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, above and below respectively, the tormented Dutch fanatic and burly French bully—how, I still wonder, could such a pair have ever co-existed, however briefly? How could such beautifully skewed visions of life have existed at all? Van Gogh and Gaugin’s several self-portraits still inspire wonder.
