Would ′durability′ labels help people shop greener?
The increasingly short lifespan of products, particularly electronics, is a double scourge: to the environment in the form of e-waste, and to the consumer who must constantly replace short-lived items with new ones. Now, a French politician has proposed a new label for products to inform consumers about their durability, traceability, eco-design and recyclability. Poirson (middle) wants to convince the European Union to adopt a Europe-wide durability label Brune Poirson, who is Secretary of State to the Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition in Emmanuel Macron's government, said the labels would "give the French the means of a more responsible consumption, more favorable to their budget."

These days, a two-year-old smartphone is considered old. Given that estimates put the number of smartphones currently in use around the world at more than two billion, that should give us pause. While they may be fairly small devices, their sheer number means constantly replacing them consumes huge amounts of resources.

Questions and concerns often arise among teachers when it comes to advanced students: just what can a high-level learner do? They have cleared the hurdle of fluency problems, as much of the language has become automatic. In other words, they don't pre-translate and then speak. They also don't get hung up on particular words, and instead can explain around unknown vocabulary. When listening or reading, they don't need to translate, and can often guess the meaning of a new word, phrase, or difficult sentence through context.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we asked our spring Student Council — 25 teenagers from all over the United States, as well as from China, South Korea, England and Canada — to search the Times and find the most interesting pieces they could on the broad topic of gender. Using both Times search and Times Machine, they unearthed everything from a 1911 report on the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire and a 1972 Times review of “Free to Be … You and Me” to current articles, videos and essays on Hillary Clinton, campus rape debates, gender pronouns, abortion, Title IX, parenting, and the struggles of the transgender community. As your students skim the selections below, they might choose the two or three articles that interest them most, then answer some of these questions: What do these pieces have in common? Women around the world continue to receive lower pay and fewer promotions. They are denied legal control over their bodies and reproductive health.
