Egypt’s military government has made cracking down on extremist groups in the Sinai Peninsula a priority, and the al-Qaida-inspired group Ansar Beyt al-Maqdis has emerged as the country’s most formidable terror threat. The two groups have been linked in the past and have a shared hostility toward Israel, but their ultimate goals are quite different. Hamas authorities in Gaza have at times clashed with even more radical al-Qaida-linked groups there. While nominally on the same side in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Shiite Lebanese militia and the Sunni international terror network have found themselves on opposite sides of Syria’s brutal civil war. Al-Qaida-linked groups have carried out attacks against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Al-Qaida remains opposed to the U.S. Al-Qaida and its affiliates remain committed to the destruction of the Jewish state. Palestinian Authority: ENEMY Palestinian Authority: COMPLICATED

Physicists Detect Gravitational Waves, Proving Einstein Right A team of scientists announced on Thursday that they had heard and recorded the sound of two black holes colliding a billion light-years away, a fleeting chirp that fulfilled the last prediction of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. That faint rising tone, physicists say, is the first direct evidence of gravitational waves, the ripples in the fabric of space-time that Einstein predicted a century ago. (Listen to it here.)

This is extremely long and probably only of interest to indie authors, but it does impact readers who shop Amazon, so I’m putting it here for anyone. Not many readers (who aren’t also authors) know any details about this, though readers sure are noticing the impacts of the scams. I see threads or posts all over the place about the difficulty readers are having with simply browsing on Amazon to find their next good read.

Why I'm Pro-Israeli AND Pro-Palestinian  As my sister and my mother ran from rockets to bomb shelters in Israel this past week, I was surprised that none of my friends here in the UK asked me how they were. Or how I was. Did they simply not care? My friend explained that many people just didn't understand what was going on or why, and she suggested I write a blog post to try to explain a little about the Israel-Palestine conflict. She said that people were confused, outraged and misinformed, and that as half Israeli-half British Londoner, I might have a unique perspective.

Russian photographers secretly scale Pyramids to capture gorgeous images Russian photographer Vadim Makhorov caused quite a stir this week when he published a set of stunning images captured from atop Egypt's Great Pyramid. The photos, posted to Makhorov's LiveJournal page, provide a rare view of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, though they've fueled a fair bit of controversy, as well. Once the pyramids complex had closed to tourists, Makhorov and his two friends, Vitaliy Raskalov and Marat Dupri, staked out for nearly five hours, hiding themselves from Egypt's armed guards. Once the coast was clear, they embarked on a 481-foot climb to the top of the pyramids, where they captured sweeping shots of the Giza Necropolis, while avoiding the sights of the guards below. According to Raskalov, the trio would have faced between one and three years in jail, had they been caught.

Shalom, motherf****r. I don’t know how to write this without sounding like the kind of person I’m about to sound like, but sometimes you’ve just got to write it like you feel it. And I feel this. I un-friended a ‘friend’ from Facebook the other day. Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories Free Sign up! Shades of Truth: The Many Ways We Lie There's a scene in the movie Something's Gotta Give that simply and succinctly captures one reality about the truth. After catching the man she loves on a date with another woman, Diane Keaton is chased out of the restaurant by a guilty and distraught Jack Nicholson. When he finally stops her, he pleads, "I have never lied to you, I have always told you some version of the truth." She replies, "The truth doesn't have versions, okay?" And that's the truth. The truth may have many sides to it.
