Can the Six Sisters of publishing rescue books? Will publishers find a new profit model? Can bookstores survive the internet? Can writers make a living? What about e-books? Ransom Stephens is a San Francisco-based technologist and author. Though the role of publishing has not changed - connect readers to writers - the revolution will not be led by an established publisher. For some reason, even when entrenched companies can see the iceberg they can't turn the ship. Have YouTube, Facebook, iTunes, Blogspot, et al reduced cultural expression? Publishers' role as the gatekeepers of quality has always been dubious. The publishing company that turns the corner, leaving the Six Sisters in the dust, will leave quality control to authors - even grammar and spelling. The biggest change in the terrain is that NetBoox will be able to "stock" every title not just online, but in every bookstore. It turns out that the 80/20 rule is wrong. The once and future e-book: on reading in the digital age - Ars Technica I was pitched headfirst into the world of e-books in 2002 when I took a job with Palm Digital Media. The company, originally called Peanut Press, was founded in 1998 with a simple plan: publish books in electronic form. As it turns out, that simple plan leads directly into a technological, economic, and political hornet's nest. But thanks to some good initial decisions (more on those later), little Peanut Press did pretty well for itself in those first few years, eventually having a legitimate claim to its self-declared title of "the world's largest e-book store." Unfortunately, despite starting the company near the peak of the original dot-com bubble, the founders of Peanut Press lost control of the company very early on. In retrospect, this signaled an important truth that persists to this day: people don't get e-books. Unlike previous owners, Fictionwise has some actual knowledge of and interest in e-books.
