DNA – The Molecule of Life

Home of CELLS alive! Was Darwin Wrong? The work of the 19th-century English naturalist shocked society and revolutionized science. How well has it withstood the test of time? Evolution by natural selection, the central concept of the life's work of Charles Darwin, is a theory. It's a theory about the origin of adaptation, complexity, and diversity among Earth's living creatures. If you are skeptical by nature, unfamiliar with the terminology of science, and unaware of the overwhelming evidence, you might even be tempted to say that it's just a theory. In the same sense, relativity as described by Albert Einstein is just a theory. Each of these theories is an explanation that has been confirmed to such a degree, by observation and experiment, that knowledgeable experts accept it as fact. The rest of us generally agree. Evolutionary theory, though, is a bit different. This documentary is available for preview only.

Below is a simplifed version of how energy and matter are transferred in the ocean. Each box represents a general class of organisms, for example autotrophs. Phytoplankton Phytoplankton is a general term encompassing all autotrophic organisms. Nitrogen-fixers Nitrogen (N) is an essential ingredient in the recipe for life. Grazers: Zooplankton and More A colorful and varied assortment of organisms directly rely on microbes as a source of nutrition. Higher Organisms Beyond the microbial work-horses of the marine environment, there are the many creatures that depend on the productivity of the base of the food chain. Viruses Viruses are the most numerous biological entities in aquatic ecosystems, with concentrations 3 to 10 times higher than bacteria. Biology Animations Carnegie Mellon's Office of Technology for Education and Department of Biological Sciences create multimedia materials for teaching and learning Biology. After an analysis of a number of Biology courses was performed to identify when and how shared concepts where taught, a team of biologists, media programmers, and learning experts came together to create animations designed to improve understanding of some of the main concepts taught in Modern Biology and Biochemistry. Phosopholipid Membranes Tutorial page describing the construction and properties of Biological Membranes. Biological Membranes Biological membranes are dynamic structures composed of a diverse set of phospholipid molecules and proteins. Phase Transition This tutorial explains how phospholipids bilayers undergo to a cooperative phase transition or melting that is similar to protein denaturation. back to index Signal Transdaction Serine Protease Uniport - Glucose Transport Symport - Lactose Permease Transporter ATP Synthesis

Meanings of color Here is a table of colors and many of the meanings they tend to evoke, particularly in Western cultures. Notice how colors can mean very different things - it is not that the colors themselves have meaning, it is that we have culturally assigned meanings to them. Also: Temperature The more towards the red end of spectrum you go, the hotter it gets. Use in retail and business Here are some ways in which colors are used in retail and business: Color can even change what you taste. Gender effects Men and women see colors differently.
