My Old Kentucky Blog dipped in dollars Shit Horse's They Shit Horses, Don't They? | Record Review If you're compelled to wince at Shit Horse on first glance, that's understandable. The band—three young, white rock musicians from Carrboro and Danny Mason, a black frontman two decades older than the band's youngest member—doesn't do itself many favors: They're called Shit Horse, of course, and the title of their debut cassette is a riff on the 1969 Jane Fonda film about a dance marathon. They have a theme song—"Shit Horse! Is Gonna Ride!," ad infinitum—and they prefer to present their songs via guerilla sets late at night on the streets of Orange County. Their lyrics are a wasteland of scatological and equine references. But don't pardon yourself too quickly.

From the North East of England, Lanterns on the Lake give us a sparking dose of cinematic indie. With their starry songs and lustrous melody, this band are quietly creating something truly magical and inspiring. Displaying both hushed melancholy and a soaring intensity, there is a sheer, austere beauty to their songs. Since forming in 2008 Lanterns on the Lake’s unique approach to music has seen them self-record, self-produce and self-release two EPs ‘The Starlight EP’ and ‘Misfortunes & Minor Victories’ as well as recent single ‘Lungs Quicken’. The band have been championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Lauren Laverne and are currently gaining a reputation for their stunningly beautiful live performances with notable dates over summer 2010 including Glastonbury and End of The Road Festival.
