Is Nuclear Power Ever Coming Back? - Celeste LeCompte Public fear, uncertainty, and doubt are still big issues for nuclear energy. Reuters It was the winter of “Snowmaggedon” in Boston, and MIT grad students Leslie Dewan and Mark Massie had just passed their qualifying exams in nuclear engineering. Suddenly, after months of nonstop test-prep work, they had the luxury of time.
US Economist Calculates Just How Inadequate Your State's Minimum Wage Is A simple tweak to how we calculate our minimum wage could lift millions of Americans out of poverty, one economist is proposing. In a new proposal from the Hamilton Project, the economic policy arm of the Brookings Institution, economist Arindrajit Dube suggests that lawmakers set state minimum wages at half the median full-time wage for the state. Doing so, he says, would would raise the minimum wage in all 50 states and lift 2.2 million people out of poverty. Many other developed economies, including those of France, Turkey and Portugal, already have minimum wages that meet Dube's requirement. In the 1960s and '70s, when the minimum wage was worth a lot more than it is today, the U.S. met that requirement too.

This couple want a deaf child. Should we try to stop them? Like any other three-year-old child, Molly has brought joy to her parents. Bright-eyed and cheerful, Molly is also deaf - and that is an issue which vexes her parents, though not for the obvious reasons. Paula Garfield, a theatre director, and her partner, Tomato Lichy, an artist and designer, are also deaf and had hoped to have a child who could not hear. 'We celebrated when we found out about Molly's deafness,' says Lichy. 'Being deaf is not about being disabled, or medically incomplete - it's about being part of a linguistic minority.
Hey, Congress, Oregon Has Your Long-Term Highway Funding Solution Right Here We've seen this movie before, where Congress heads straight toward a transportation funding cliff it totally saw coming, so we know that lawmakers will find some awkward-and-unnecessarily-dramatic way to stop at the edge. That's great for all the jobs spared in the short term, but bad for the hope of learning any long-term lessons. Because the real danger is not this fiscal cliff, but the massive funding sinkhole coming to take car and cliff alike; here's Senator Orrin Hatch, via The Hill: "I think we'll resolve this problem," Hatch said. Solar energy that doesn't block the view A team of researchers at Michigan State University has developed a new type of solar concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy while allowing people to actually see through the window. It is called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator and can be used on buildings, cell phones and any other device that has a clear surface. And, according to Richard Lunt of MSU's College of Engineering, the key word is "transparent." Research in the production of energy from solar cells placed around luminescent plastic-like materials is not new. These past efforts, however, have yielded poor results -- the energy production was inefficient and the materials were highly colored.
