The overall digital health sector - which includes mHealth, B2B apps and consumer services such as ZocDoc - is also rapidly expanding. That's if venture capital funding is anything to go by. A report by financial services company Burrill & Company states that private financings in digital health more than tripled in the first half of 2012. This follows a June report from nonprofit foundation Rock Health that showed "skyrocketing" VC funding in the sector. According to Burrill & Company, digital health investments "grew to $499 million in 46 transactions during the first half of the year, compared to just $156 million in 19 transactions for the same period in 2011."
TrialCard - Home We deliver best in class patient-centric health care solutions to pharma, providers, pharmacy, and patients. Market Access Solutions JiffPad Creates Personalized Medical Diagrams Via iPad Attempting to “reinvent healthcare communication,” Jiffpad is an app that lets doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals communicate with patients via the iPad. Allowing users to select from already provided medical diagrams or upload pictures of their own, the app creates a “JiffTalk,” digitizing the communication between a doctor and a patient and creating a digital record of medical instruction that patients can then email home or share with their families. Consisting of mix-and-match visual components in categories like cataracts or angioplasty, the JiffPad is applicable across most medical practices. Because it is visual by nature, the app isn’t limited to one specific language. Carter says that the advantage of JiffPad over other tools for medical diagramming is that it is patient specific and infinitely portable, allowing doctors to create playlists of diagrams that they often use, for example.
FDA approves edible electronic pills that sense medication intake When you hear the term electronic pills, you might be imagining some sort of hardwired chips that you’re supposed to unwillingly ingest. This isn’t quite the case. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration passed an edible electronic sensor on Monday that will be used to keep track of a patient’s medication patterns to ensure they are regularly taking their meds. One Medical Raises $20 Million For The Modern Doctor’s Office It’s 2011, but most doctor’s offices are still stuck in the 1990s when it comes to patient-facing technology. The receptionist probably has a computer to manage appointments, but typically you still sign in on paper, fill out forms on a clipboard, and your doctor relies on a loosely-bound sheaf of papers to check your medical records. Tom Lee is trying to change that from the ground up with One Medical Group, the venture-backed primary care practice he founded a few years ago where he is CEO. On Friday, he closed a $20 million series E, led by Maverick Capital, with Benchmark, Oak Investment, and DAG Ventures participating. The new round brings the total capital raised since 2007 to $46.5 million. One Medical operates 9 doctor’s offices in San Francisco and New York, and will open 5 more this year, expanding to Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.

Elegant Toys That Explain Scary Medical Procedures To Kids This is part of a series highlighting notable entries to our 2012 Innovation By Design Awards--Ed. A trip through a CT scanner can be a harrowing experience: Lying on a narrow examination table, you’re slid into a short tunnel, where you’re expected to remain perfectly still for half an hour while an X-ray tube rotates around you. The exam is nerve-racking for those who understand the procedure, but it can be downright scary and bewildering for a child. In trying to demystify such procedures to kids, hospital personnel typically use dolls and real medical instruments like syringes and drips to kids, but those methods aren’t effective at dispelling the understandable fear. “Examinations and operations are a cause of anxiety in the little patients, [which] can be relieved by informing them of what to expect during their visit,” writes Hikaru Imamura, a recent Eindhoven grad.
