Community website governance structure? What is a good basic governance structure for a community website? I'm asking because these kinds of "online communities" are cropping up all over the place, and I'm seeing a pattern I've seen before - when nonprofits encounter volunteers or donated computer hardware. The basic (unexamined) assumption is a) free is better, and b) if we get it (community site, volunteer, hardware), it'll run itself. Left unexamined is the management time involved in making sure these resources run smoothly, and that some roles should b kept in-house, and some should be delegated. Below is a brief brain-dump of the roles involved in running a online community site. Often, many roles are the responsibility of one person, but it's important to recognize the different roles which could eventually be divvied up among individuals. For the first read through, just ignore the little symbols. Now I went through and identified certain roles: If there's no mark, I don't have a strong opinion either way.

Content will be the topic of many other columns; here I address some classic mistakes in managing the design of a website. 1. This is the number one problem, all right. Granted, these days, you need a website simply to be considered a professionally run organization (not being on the Web is like not having a fax machine: people think you are a fly-by-night). Most companies should start their web design project by finding out ways in which they can provide true customer value on their site. 2. 3. A classic sign of a mismanaged website is when the homepage has a button for each of the Senior Vice Presidents in the company. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

A List Apart: Articles: Web Governance: Becoming an Agent of Change The web’s hit the big time in a way few of us imagined possible. So as people who make websites, you’d think we’d be celebrating our repeated successes in designing amazing user experiences, as the organizations we work for become increasingly successful. But many of us have noticed a problem in our work: the user experiences we deliver don’t meet our expectations. Here’s the problem: organizations are the context for our work, and when it comes to the web, organizations are broken.
