It is not necessary to be a technologist or engineer to master Arduino. Arduino development can be picked up by almost anybody. For a long time Arduino has been confined to 8 bit AVR microcontrollers. As the Arduino programming language is partly a subset of C++, and it is possible to compile C++ code for the PIC32 using the GNU MIPS C++ compiler, working with the ChipKIT/Arduino may turn out to be a good introduction to C++ embedded systems programming for the PIC32. In the near future we will also be selling the ARM Cortex M3 based Maple boards from Leaflabs. ChipKIT based variants of the Arduino starter kit are also available.
