All About Nibs The nib is the heart of the fountain pen; it is the only part that touches paper and this is the most important part in determining writing performance. Pictured above are the nibs and feeds from a Cross Solo and a vintage Waterman 52 1/2 V. Tip/Point The tip of the nib is usually a pellet of hard metal soldered to the nib. Slit The nib has a long thin slit from the point to the breather hole. Tines The parts of the nib on either side are refered to as the tines of the nib (like the tines of a fork). Breather Hole The breather hole allows air into the feed. Imprint and Scrollwork A penmaker will often imprint names or designs here. Base The base of the nib goes into the section and is concealed from view unless the pen is disassembled. John Mottishaw has subjected a wide variety of nibs to spectrographic analysis to determine the actual composition of the tipping material. Gold and steel are the traditional materials used for nibs. The easiest way to illustrate this is with a picture.

Article #052501085 Fountain Pen Nibs: The Basics Fountain pen nibs are made in a bewildering array of sizes and styles. Of course, covering everything about every kind of nib in one article would be bewildering as well—I won’t do that—but there should be enough useful information to help you better decide what nibs might best suit your writing style. In this article, I’ll pretend to be knowledgeable about the following aspects of nibs: Nib tip shapes Nib sizes and types Problems Nib Tip Shapes There are three basic nib shapes: Round, stub, and italic. Round Nibs: A round nib is ground and polished to have roughly a circular footprint, so that its line width is fairly uniform no matter what direction the nib is moving across the paper. A ball-point nib is like a standard round nib, but it is also ground and polished so that you can write with it while holding the pen with its nib on the underside instead of in the usual nib-uppermost orientation. Italic Nibs: An italic nib is much more elongated. Now we come to the the oblique. Problems

Fountain Pen Guide Series, Session 1: Nibs, Feeds, and How They Come Together | Pentorium Next Session: Filling Systems -> This is the first in a long list of guides all about fountain pens, ink, and everything that makes a fountain pen what it is. Fountain pens are one of the most difficult writing instruments to get used to after coming from ballpoints or pencils, and maintaining them can sometimes be just as confusing. This series is designed to help you get the most out of your pens and become versed with what makes them tick. I will also delve into other topics, such as how to buy a fountain pen, how to pick a quality pen, different inks for your pen, and much, much more! Each section will be split up into separate posts, and I will include a table of contents at the top of each post. During these guides I will introduce new words, but don’t worry! Contents Session 1: Nibs, Feeds, and How They Come Together Those that have taken a dive right into the fountain pen world will inevitably experience a pen that doesn’t quite write as advertised. Nibs, Parts, and Supplies for Vintage Fountain Pens and Pencils We offer only a limited selection of parts. The main reason is simple: most vintage pen parts aren't interchangeable. They exhibit a maddening range of variations, and often as not even a correct original part must be hand-fitted. In most cases, it takes as much time to figure out what a do-it-yourself pen repairer actually needs as it would take to do the job ourselves, so please don't take it amiss when we ask you not to inquire about pen parts other than those listed. Please make certain that the part you are ordering is the one you need -- returns of parts will not be accepted unless defective or not as described. Unless otherwise noted, all parts are factory-made originals (this does not apply to sacs and seals, where factory originals would be age-hardened and unusable). Items without an order button (or quoted but not listed) may be added to your shopping cart through the form below.
