Pearltrees When is the social curation bubble going to burst? You just can’t move for social curation services right now. The biggest noise might be coming from Pinterest, which is growing like a weed — but whether it’s the new-look Delicious, Switzerland’s Paperli, shopping curation site Svpply, image service Mlkshk or another site, the fact is that almost everybody seems to want to help you save and sort and share the things you find on the web right now. With this swirl of activity, then, it’s no surprise to hear that Parisian service Pearltrees — slogan “collect, organize, discover” — has just raised another $6 million of funding, led by local conglomerate Groupe Accueil. The company, which has been running in public since 2009, welcomed the injection of funds as a way to help expand and scale up its system for bookmarking and organizing, which is based around a clustered visual interface. And it needs that scale. Right now Pearltrees is small and has moderate momentum, building up 350,000 users in the past three years.

Meet Loomio, the small-scale decision-making platform with the biggest ambitions Technology can enable many things, both good and bad. In the case of democracy, we’ve recently seen how technology can concentrate power through surveillance, but there’s a clear flipside too – social media gives more people a powerful voice, and it’s a lot easier to organize people around an idea these days. But what of decision-making? Decision time Loomio reminds me a lot of Liquid Feedback, a complex online policy-making system developed by the German Pirate Party. The movement’s philosophy of collective decision-making had great potential, but was limited by the difficulty of getting everyone to the same place at the same time to make those decisions, Knight explained: “During the Occupy movement we were looking for online tools to resolve that situation. Building up from there will involve iterating the system to handle larger numbers of people and more complex decisions, as well as more contentious or public decision-making, Knight added. User-friendly democracy

What problem does Pearltrees solve?

A Community-Driven Roadmap: Get Involved in Setting the Development Priorities for Loomio | Loomio Right from the start, Loomio has been a community-driven project. From day one, we’ve had real people using Loomio to make real decisions, and real world feedback from users has directed development all along. The Loomio Community group is an active, enthusiastic group of supporters and contributors. We recently went back through the entire archive of the Loomio Community group (a treasure trove of over 2 years worth of content) and pulled out a list of all the ideas ever suggested for Loomio. Loomio Roadmap: All Your Ideas & More We’ve heard many times that the community wants a publicly viewable roadmap, so people know what’s in the pipeline, and a way for users to give feedback on it. The backlog of ideas have come from the Loomio Community, and also include what we’ve promised to deliver for Loomio 1.0 for the crowdfunding campaign we recently completed. There are five main lists of cards: Cards will move along from ideas to implemented features, in a public, transparent way. Wow!

Pearltrees releases a new version, without any pearls nor trees The Paris-based startup founded in 2009 once declared: “We focus on the visual potential of Pearltrees to let people dive deeply into their interests and nearly feel them”. Their product, offering a digital curation tool, was unique because of the visual interface voluntareely original: links and folders symbolized by rounded pearls attached together like the branches of a tree. Today, pearls and trees have disappeared to make room for a brand new and larger organisation tool. Two years ago, everyone wanted to build products around “curation” and “interest graph”. The other main improvement lies in the shift from Flash to HTML5 technology, which will make a huge difference for all those who never update their Flash player – and those who think Flash is “so 2011”. Why giving up the core of the product, after 4,5 years of existence and 1,7 million users? The only drawback is that the design of the app has not changed much and looks a little old to create a real agreeable experience.
